Hi, I'm Anna, and I'm excited to be joining the team at Pride Referrals as a Surgical Intern.

I graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2015 and have worked as a small animal vet in my home county of North Yorkshire ever since. Throughout my career I've worked in both private and charity practice, treating a wide range of species from wildlife to much-loved household pets. More recently, I spent several months working as a vet at an American university in the Caribbean, which was a fantastic experience that broadened my clinical skills and gave me an insight into veterinary education outside the UK. And I got to swim with Sea Turtles!

These varied experiences have helped shape my interests in both teaching and surgery, with a particular interest for orthopaedics.

Outside of work, I have a 16-year-old domestic shorthair cat called Fury (as in The Night Fury, not Tyson Fury!). I originally looked after her for a week while her owners were on holiday... seven years later and she's still here!

When I'm not at work, you'll usually find me exploring the countryside, learning to play the piano, or taking part in a variety of sports, with football being my favourite.

I'm excited to explore Derbyshire and meet the clients and patients at Pride Referrals. I hope to make the most of this opportunity to learn from the specialist surgical team while further developing my surgical knowledge and clinical skills.

At , we’re passionate about supporting our teams to grow, develop, and pursue the areas of Veterinary medicine they love most.

For Nurse Rachel, that journey has led her into Advanced Imaging.

“For over 25 years I have worked for Scarsdale Vets, developing extensive experience in veterinary nursing and patient care, especially since working at Pride Veterinary Referrals. I have always had a strong interest in diagnostic imaging and was lucky enough to have the opportunity to progress into the role of Advanced Imaging Nurse in MRI & CT in February 2025.

I am thoroughly enjoying expanding my skills and knowledge within this specialist area. I have undertaken CT & MRI online courses with Eden Learning throughout the year, which I have really enjoyed. I am trained in performing CTs and am now concentrating on performing MRIs. The team I work with are amazing and I am absolutely loving this role!”

Rachel’s progression is a brilliant example of how career development can take many different paths. At Pride Veterinary Referrals, we’re proud to support our teams in advancing their clinical interests, building specialist skills, and developing fulfilling careers - whether that’s through leadership, education, or hands-on clinical progression.

Meet Nola, a tiny springer spaniel who was referred to our Internal Medicine team in March for ongoing elevated liver enzymes. She had a work up with Tate and diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and suspected chronic hepatitis. Last week Nola had surgical liver biopsies with Rosario so that her liver issue can be appropriately diagnosed. Nola is owned by our physiotherapist Shannon after she rehomed her after a dramatic start in life. Nola was signed over to a vets when she was 12 weeks old due to being unwell and went on to have 2 surgeries for bowel intussusception and septic peritonitis before being rehomed with Shannon.

Nola will continue to be cared for by our medicine team whilst we await the formal diagnosis of her liver issue. We hope she recovers well, Nola can’t wait to get back to her fun swims in the hydrotherapy pool when she is recovered!

This is another great example of why referring to a multi-disciplinary hospital ensures the greatest all round care for your pets!

🐾 Meet Malcolm! 🐾

Malcolm is a gorgeous 8-year-old Dalmatian who was referred to the Neurology Team at after suddenly becoming unable to walk on all four limbs.

Following advanced imaging, Malcolm was diagnosed with a disc extrusion in his neck between C3–C4 and underwent surgery with our Specialist Neurosurgeon Chris Posporis to remove the disc material.

We’re so pleased to share that Malcolm is already showing encouraging signs of improvement and recovery!

To make things even sweeter, Malcolm’s wonderfully caring owners brought in treats for the team, as well as a selection of goodies for the other inpatients currently staying with us in hospital - such a thoughtful gesture and very much appreciated by both patients and staff alike!

Share your well wishes for Malcolm in the comments below!

Healthy Vision Month – Let’s Talk About Your Pet’s Eyes!

Did you know that eye problems in pets can often go unnoticed until they become more serious? This Healthy Vision Month, our Ophthalmology Team wants to highlight just how important your pet’s eye health is.

Keep an eye out for signs such as:
Squinting or blinking more than usual
Redness or swelling
Discharge or cloudiness
Rubbing or pawing at the eye

These can all be early signs that something isn’t quite right. Early intervention is key and can make a huge difference in protecting your pet’s vision .

Our team is here to help with specialist assessments, diagnostics and treatments to keep your pet seeing clearly and comfortably!

If you have concerns about your pet’s eyes, speak to your primary care vet about whether a referral to the Ophthalmology Team at Pride Veterinary Referrals may be appropriate. Maisie recently returned to see our Oncology team for her recheck with Oncologist Yike and Oncology Nurse Kim and we are so pleased to share that she is continuing to do really well!

Since her diagnosis last year, Maisie has been an absolute superstar throughout her treatment. The team always love seeing her come through the doors and this visit was no exception

It’s wonderful to watch her confidence, personality and playful spirit continue to shine at each appointment. She remains a very special patient to us all and we are incredibly proud of both Maisie and her devoted owner.
