Meet Jazz! 💙🐾

We recently saw the lovely Jazz to investigate his heart murmur, and his owners kindly left us some lovely feedback about their experience with us.

They were particularly pleased with how gently and carefully we performed Jazz’s heart scan, helping to make the experience as calm and stress-free as possible.

We always encourage owners to stay with their pets during their heart scan. Being together can help both pets and their owners feel more comfortable, and we use gentle handling and positive reinforcement throughout.

We’re delighted to hear that Jazz is doing well at home and that we could support both him and his owners 💙

Procedure close up: PDA closure 💙🩺

A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart condition where a connection that should close shortly after birth remains open. Many patients with PDA show no clinical signs other than a loud heart murmur, but if left untreated, it can lead to heart enlargement and eventually heart failure.

One of the most common ways we treat a PDA is by placing a small device called an Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder (ACDO). The device is delivered through an artery in the back leg using a catheter and positioned within the PDA to seal the abnormal opening.

🎥 Video: Watch as the ACDO is deployed. As the device opens, it seals the PDA and stops the abnormal blood flow.

Interventional procedures like this can be life-changing, allowing many dogs to go on to live long, happy and healthy lives.

Did you know a minimally invasive procedure can help some dogs born with pulmonic stenosis? 💙🐾

Pulmonic stenosis is a congenital heart condition where the pulmonic valve is abnormally narrowed.

This narrowing partially obstructs blood flow leaving the heart, meaning the right side of the heart has to work much harder to pump blood. Over time, this can lead to exercise intolerance, weakness, collapsing episodes and, in some cases, heart failure.

A stent valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve this obstruction. During the procedure, a balloon-tipped catheter is passed through a vein in the neck and guided to the narrowed valve. A stent (a small metal mesh tube) is then placed to help keep the narrowed area open. See the photo of a stent in place!

By widening the obstruction, blood can flow more easily from the heart, reducing strain on the right side of the heart and improving heart function and quality of life.

☀️ Heatwave Advice for Our Cardiac Patients ☀️

With temperatures set to rise this week, we'd like to remind owners that pets with heart disease can be more vulnerable during hot weather. Heat can place additional strain and may worsen existing cardiac conditions, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

Please keep a close eye on your pets during the heatwave and contact us or your primary care veterinary practice if you have any concerns.

☀️ How can you help your pet stay safe and comfortable?

🐾 In the photo, Stanley is wearing a cooling coat, designed to help keep dogs cool and comfortable during warmer weather. These are available to buy from the practice!

🐾 Monitor their sleeping respiratory rate regularly. This is the number of breaths your pet takes in one minute while asleep. Let us know if you notice any changes from their normal rate.

🐾 Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. If it is still too warm, it is safest to skip the walk altogether.

🐾 Ensure fresh drinking water is always available. Ice can be added if your pet enjoys it, but please supervise and be mindful of any choking risks.

🐾 Help them keep cool with fans, good ventilation, shaded areas, cooling mats, frozen treats, or wrapped frozen water bottles that they can choose to lie near.

🐾 If using cool water to help lower body temperature, combine this with airflow from a fan or breeze to encourage effective evaporative cooling.

🐾 Never leave pets in cars, conservatories, or other enclosed spaces that can heat up rapidly.

⚠️ Signs of heatstroke can include:
• Excessive panting
• Restlessness
• Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
• Weakness
• Collapse

If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary advice immediately.

Most importantly, remember that our cardiac patients may tire more quickly and need a little extra support during hot weather.
