I’ve seen a few comments about £10 being expensive for an adult hen, so I wanted to put this into perspective.
When you buy an adult hen from me, you’re not buying a day-old chick that still needs weeks of heat, feed, care, and growing before you even know what you have. You’re buying a bird that I’ve already put the time, money, and work into raising.
I’ve paid to feed her for weeks. I’ve provided the housing, electricity, water, equipment, cleaning, and daily care. I’ve taken on the losses that sometimes happen while raising chicks. I handle my birds, sort through them, and carefully select what I keep and what I offer. In many cases, I’m holding back and offering some of the best birds from specific lines.
There is a lot of sweat, time, money, and sometimes tears that go into getting these birds from an egg to a healthy adult.
At £10, you’re getting an established hen without having to buy chicks, run a brooder, pay for weeks of feed and electricity, wait for them to mature, or raise a bunch of males just to get the hens you actually wanted. Depending on age, these girls may already be laying or be right at laying age.
I completely understand that £10 won’t fit everyone’s budget, and that’s okay. Hatching eggs and chicks are available for people who would rather put in that time and expense themselves.
But I’m also going to stand firm on the value of my adult birds.
I’m not a giant hatchery producing thousands of chicks every week and trying to move birds as quickly as possible. I’m a small breeder. I handle and select these birds individually. I pay attention to size, health, color, quality, and the breeding lines they come from. I take pride in what leaves my farm with my name attached to it.
I already try to give back where I can. I offer discounts on larger orders. I’ll throw in males for free as a thank you when I can. I’m constantly giving extras, especially to local customers who take the time to travel and meet me, even when it isn’t expected or necessary.
The truth is, I already operate on very small margins and sometimes at a loss. Lowering my prices even further just because someone believes an adult hen should be cheaper doesn’t make sense for me, and it also isn’t fair to other breeders in our community who are trying to put a fair value on their time and birds.
There will always be someone selling birds cheaper. There will always be someone hatching large numbers and trying to offload extras quickly. That doesn’t mean every bird should be priced the same.
My birds are carefully raised and selected. I believe in their quality, I stand behind what I produce, and I believe they are worth the price and the wait.
I will always try to take care of my customers, but I also have to put value on my work. I stand by it. You should too ❤️
