Off their food, or spitting their tablets out?

Arden Grange Tasty Pastes come in three flavours, liver, turkey and salmon, and dogs find them really tasty. Squeeze a pea sized amount onto a tablet, or mix it in with a crushed one. They’re handy for training and recall too.

Liver: fresh pork and pork liver
Turkey: fresh turkey liver
Salmon: fresh salmon
Grain free and naturally hypoallergenic
Suitable for dogs and cats

Small dogs up to 1/6 of a tube a day
Medium dogs up to 1/4 of a tube a day
Large dogs up to 1/2 a tube a day

Sensitive tummy, or loose poos that come and go?

Good bacteria in the gut help keep stools normal. Dorwest Probiotic Plus has a prebiotic, a probiotic and a postbiotic in one capsule, and the probiotic in it, Calsporin, has been shown to improve stool consistency in dogs.

Under 10kg: 1 capsule a day
10 to 25kg: 2 capsules a day
Over 25kg: 3 capsules a day
Give it whole, or pull it apart and sprinkle it on food

If fireworks have been really bad for your dog before, today’s the day to start.

Bonfire Night is three weeks today, Thursday 5 November. Dorwest Scullcap & Valerian Tablets work best given every day over time, so starting now means your dog’s already settled before the bangs start.

1 tablet per 5kg bodyweight, daily
Ideally half in the morning and half in the evening
Not suitable for pregnant or nursing dogs

I'm so proud to be part of the Trident Elite team, teaching canine first aid on their 4-Week Foundation programme for professional dog trainers. These are the trainers of the future, the people who will be working with your dogs every day, so knowing what to do in an emergency really matters.

This one means a lot to me. We've been training with Trident Elite since Kali was 14 weeks old, and I've seen first hand the care and dedication they put into every dog and every owner.

Does your girl struggle with phantom pregnancies?

About 6 to 8 weeks after her season she might start nesting, collecting toys, blankets or your clothes, and mothering a soft toy. Some girls go off their food, seem low or a bit nervous, and you might notice swollen teats or even some milk.

Please don’t worry, it’s her hormones and it usually settles within a few weeks. Never tell her off for mothering her toys, it’s natural.

Dorwest Raspberry Leaf Tablets have just landed in the shop. Raspberry leaf can help her cope better with the hormonal changes, by helping keep a normal balance.

For phantom pregnancies: 2 tablets per 10kg bodyweight daily, from the start of her season, for 12 weeks. It can still help if the signs have already started.

It’s also used to help get girls ready for whelping, by helping keep the muscles of the womb toned and strong. For that it’s 1 tablet per 10kg daily, from the third week of pregnancy until a week after the pups arrive.

If she seems to be in pain, see your vet straight away.

They said a Doberman would be aggressive. She just wanted the front seat.

Dobermans get such a bad name. People expect them to be unpredictable, hard to handle, a dog you can’t trust around anyone. That’s really not what we live with every day.

Kali has been at the shop with me since she was 9 weeks old, meeting customers and their dogs, and that’s the bit people don’t realise about this breed. They’re clever, sensitive dogs that just want to be with their person. Give them the time, the training and the company and you get a dog like her.

We’ve been training and learning with together since she was 14 weeks old, and she’s improving so much.

So when Every Little Step came on in the car it honestly couldn’t have been more fitting. That’s us. A team, always together.

Not all fish oils are made equal. Is yours actually doing anything?

A cheap low-grade oil can end up doing very little, and when skin is already irritated or itchy, that’s often where it shows first.

Itchy dog? Before you buy anything, look at what’s in the bowl.

Chicken is the biggest culprit. Veg does help with them losing weight, but can cause itching too. Staying on the same protein can cause intolerances as well.

What I’d do:

Stop the chicken first
Then stop the veg
Go back to one gentle, easily digestible protein such as Turkey & Tripe for a week
Keep a simple diary of how your dog looks, feels and how their poo presents. This is your baseline
Get some Leucillin spray to help soothe the itching
Then introduce a second protein slowly, for example Beef & Tripe, and combine the two for a week before adding anything else
Once settled, rotate between 4 to 6 proteins

Please don’t worry, this is an easy place to start.

Is your dog struggling with bad breath?

Brushing is still the best way to keep on top of plaque, but plenty of dogs won’t let you near their mouth with a toothbrush. Plaque that’s left can harden into tartar.

Scratching more than usual, or licking at the same patch over and over?

Germs on the skin can be behind itchy, flaky or smelly skin, and they get into cuts, grazes and bites too.

I’d get some of the Leucillin spray to help soothe the itching. It’s an antiseptic spray that’s skin pH neutral and doesn’t sting, so it’s safe on sore skin, in ears and around eyes, and there’s no need to rinse it off.

Spray it straight onto the skin
Make sure it gets through the coat to the skin

Use it on cuts, grazes, bites, itchy patches and hot spots
