🐾 A warm welcome for every patient 💚

When you walk through the doors, you’ll often be greeted by one of our friendly reception team - like Victoria & Caroline! 👋🏼

We have a large reception team, with our telephone calls handled separately within the practice. 📞 This means that when you’re at our reception desk, our full attention can be on you and your pet.

We’ve also created dedicated spaces to help make every visit as calm and comfortable as possible, including a cat lounge for our feline patients 🐱 and a quiet room for our nervous or overwhelmed patients. Our quiet room has its own entrance and exit, meaning you can avoid reception completely if needed. 🐾

We’re always looking for ways to make a visit to Apex better for you and your pet. 💚 So, if there’s ever anything we can do to make your visit easier, calmer or more comfortable, please let us know! We’re always happy to help. 🐾🥰

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀?😳

Recently, we treated the lovely Kaiser, who came to see us after spending a hot day playing in a paddling pool 💦

After getting home, Kaiser became very lethargic, wobbly on his feet, and vomited large amounts of frothy foam 😨 Blood tests confirmed he was suffering from water intoxication (water toxicity) 💉

Water intoxication occurs when a dog swallows excessive amounts of water in a short period of time. This dilutes the sodium levels in the bloodstream, causing cells to swell. In severe cases, this can lead to brain swelling, seizures, collapse, coma, and can even be life-threatening if not treated promptly 😢

Dogs can accidentally consume too much water while:
Chasing or biting at water from a hose or sprinkler
Fetching toys repeatedly from lakes or pools
Playing enthusiastically in paddling pools or with garden sprinklers

❗️𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲❗️
-Lethargy
-Weakness or wobbliness
-Vomiting (sometimes frothy)
-Confusion or disorientation
-Excessive drooling
-Pale gums
-Tremors or seizures in severe cases

Kaiser was admitted to stay with us overnight for close monitoring and treatment 🏥 including intravenous fluids to help correct his electrolyte imbalance. Thankfully, he responded well and was able to go home the following day feeling much brighter 😁

As the weather stays warm, we still encourage water play to help keep our dogs cool - but it's important to supervise them, take regular breaks, and discourage them from repeatedly biting at jets of water or gulping large amounts while playing.

If your dog develops any of the signs above after water play, please contact your vet immediately 📞 Early treatment can make all the difference.

Today we said a very fond “see you soon” to our lovely Head Nurse, Chloe, as she heads off on maternity leave! 💚👶

We couldn’t let her go without a little celebration (and, of course, plenty of treats!) 🥰

Chloe is such a huge part of the Apex team, and while we’re going to miss having her around the practice, we’re so excited for her as she starts this very special new chapter.

Wishing Chloe and her husband Stuart all the love, happiness and snuggles in the world. We can’t wait to meet the newest little member of the Apex family! 🍼✨

☀️ Warm weather warning for beach-loving pups! 🐶

Rocko recently learned that too much fun at the beach can sometimes lead to a trip to the vets... 😬

After spending the day enthusiastically digging in the sand, Rocko started vomiting and feeling very sorry for himself the day after. When he came in to see us, we took some X-rays and the cause quickly became clear 👀

The X-rays showed that Rocko's intestines were packed full of sand! 🏖️ Unfortunately, he had swallowed so much while digging that it had caused a blockage.

Rocko needed emergency out-of-hours surgery, which we were able to perform here at the practice 🚑. During the procedure, we flushed as much sand as possible through into the colon and relieved the blockage.

The surgery was only part of the challenge. Sand can be very irritating to the intestines and it also pulls water into the gut, leaving dogs dehydrated and feeling really poorly 😔. Rocko then spent 4 days in hospital with us receiving fluids, pain relief and plenty of cuddles and care from our team 🐾

The good news? 🎉 Rocko made a fantastic recovery and is now back home with his family!

As we're all enjoying the warmer weather and heading to the beach more often 🌊, it's worth remembering that sand ingestion can be a serious problem for dogs that love digging, chasing sandy balls 🎾 or carrying sandy toys.

Keep an eye out for vomiting, lethargy, reduced appetite and signs of tummy pain. If you notice any of these signs after a beach trip, please get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.
