🐾HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY🐾

Today we’re celebrating the dogs who bring so much joy, laughter and companionship into our lives - and as a veterinary team, we’re also celebrating everything we can do to help keep them happy, healthy and by our side for as long as possible.❤️

From puppyhood through to their golden years, regular veterinary check-ups, vaccinations, parasite protection, dental care, a healthy weight and appropriate nutrition all play an important part in keeping our four-legged friends feeling their best. 🩺🐶

And of course, good health is about more than just physical wellbeing. Exercise, enrichment, training, play, companionship and plenty of love are all part of giving our dogs the best life possible. 🐾

So today, give your dog an extra cuddle, an extra walk or perhaps their favourite treat - they deserve it! 🥰

These two gorgeous kittens were recently brought into our care as strays and are currently being fostered by one of our vets. ❤️

🖤🤍 Black & white female
🤎🤍 Tabby & white male (slightly younger than the female)

They have become good little companions and can be rehomed together or separately, depending on the right home for each of them.

Both are looking for loving, responsible homes where they can grow into happy, healthy cats. 🥰

🐱💙 Happy International Cat Day! 💙🐱

Today we’re celebrating all the wonderful cats who bring so much personality, love (and occasionally a little chaos! 😹) into our lives.

From the cuddly lap cats to the independent adventurers, every cat is unique — and we love them all! 🐾

International Cat Day is also a great reminder to give your feline friend a little extra TLC today. Whether that’s a favourite treat, some playtime, a cosy nap in the sun, or simply respecting their decision to ignore you completely… 😂

And of course, regular health checks, vaccinations, parasite protection and dental care all help keep our feline friends happy and healthy for years to come.

⚠️Bluetongue (BTV-3) Vaccine Update - A Request to Our Farming Clients⚠️

Due to the current national shortage of the BTV-3 Bluetongue vaccine, supplies are extremely limited, and unfortunately we do not know when further stock will become available.

If you have any spare doses of the BTV-3 vaccine that you no longer require, we would be very grateful if you could let the surgery know.
With your permission, we hope to help redistribute unused doses to other local farmers who are still trying to protect their livestock.

Working together as a farming community can help make the best use of the limited vaccine currently available.

🚨 URGENT LIVESTOCK UPDATE: BTV-3 On The Rise 🚨

We are seeing a major escalation in Bluetongue Virus (BTV-3) cases compared to this time last year.
On-the-ground reports from vets suggest the virus is moving faster than the official data reflects. It is severely impacting sheep, cattle, and camelids.

📉 Why this season is different

The data from this summer shows a stark contrast to last year

●July 2025 - Just a dozen isolated cases reported nationwide.
●July 2026 - Well over 100 confirmed cases in a single month.
●Rapid Spread - Once one animal tests positive, symptoms are quickly tearing through the rest of the group.
●Sudden Fatalities - High mortality rates and sudden collapses are being reported, including one Devon flock that saw 10% of its animals hit.
●Local Threat - This is no longer a distant issue - cases have now hit close to home with confirmations in Chester and Wrexham.

🔎 Key Symptoms to Watch For

Not every animal will show every symptom. Checking your livestock for even one or two of these signs warrants an immediate call.

●High fever or temperature
●Excessive drooling and salivation
●Swelling around the face, lips, muzzle, or tongue
●Crusts or ulcers on the mouth and nose
●Heavy nasal discharge
●Inflamed, red, or swollen skin right above the hooves (coronary band)
●Severe lameness or reluctance to move
●Sudden drop in milk yield for dairy stock
●Unexplained abortions or deformed lambs/calves
●Sudden collapse or death

⚠️ Keep in mind

The APHA Bluetongue Case Map usually suffers from a 7 to 10-day delay due to the time it takes to process and return test results.

The true number of active cases in the UK is likely much higher than what is currently visible online.

🛡️ Protect Your Stock - Vaccination Works

Because midges spread BTV-3, the virus can skip across regions overnight. Taking proactive steps through vaccination is currently our most powerful line of defense to minimise clinical disease and prevent livestock deaths. Securing your animals now gives your herd or flock the best fighting chance before midges arrive on your farm.

📌Bluetongue is a strictly notifiable disease.

If you have any suspicions at all, you must report it immediately to the APHA on 0300 303 8268.

🌾Grass Seed Season is Here - Don't Ignore the Signs!🐾

Grass seeds may look harmless, but they can cause painful and sometimes serious problems for our pets.

These tiny seeds can become lodged almost anywhere including:
👂 Ears
👃 Noses
👁️ Eyes
🐾 Between the toes
🧥 Under the skin

Signs to look out for include:
🔸 Sudden head shaking or scratching at the ears
🔸 Sneezing repeatedly or nosebleeds
🔸 Excessive licking or chewing at a paw
🔸 Swelling, redness or a lump
🔸 Squinting, a red eye or excessive discharge

Grass seeds don't break down naturally and can continue to migrate through the body causing infection and damage if left untreated.

What you can do:
✔️ Check your pet after every walk, especially if they've been in long grass.
✔️ Pay close attention to paws, ears, eyes and the coat.
✔️ Keep the hair between your dog's toes trimmed if appropriate.
✔️ Avoid walking through long, dry grass where possible.

If you think your pet may have picked up a grass seed, don't wait to see if it improves. Early treatment is much easier and can prevent more serious complications.

This handsome male fox red Labrador was found near St Brigid's School, Denbigh and is currently safe with us at the surgery.

He is microchipped, however the contact details are not up to date, so we're unable to reach his owner.

If you believe he is your dog, or know who he belongs to, please contact the practice as soon as possible on 01745 812047.

Proof of ownership will be required.

Please share to help us reunite him with his family. ❤️
