Daventry Veterinary Clinic Daventry Veterinary Clinic is a privately owned, independent practice providing quality pet care

Daventry Veterinary Clinic was established in August 2001 by veterinary surgeons Sarah Aldridge and a colleague from university. It was the first dedicated 100% small animal practice in Daventry aiming to provide high standards of care for pets and their owners in a modern, friendly environment. We understand that your pets are part of your family and that their health and well-being are very important to you. We aim to give you the best possible advice on how to keep your pets happy and healthy, we will always advise you of the likely costs involved of course of treatment or procedure. We are all pet owners ourselves and promise to look after your pets as if they were our own.

๐ŸŒƒAs the nights draw in, keeping pets mentally stimulated indoors matters more than ever.

Puzzle feeders, scent trails, and rotating toys all help โ€“ cats especially appreciate a cosy hideaway with a view.

๐Ÿ‚ Shorter days and cosier evenings are lovely โ€“ but they can also mean pets quietly gaining weight over autumn, a few extra treats and less activity adding up before you notice.

A quick weigh-in with us can catch it early, before it becomes a winter habit.

September is Su***de Prevention Month. Though it is not a happy topic, it is an important one.

In the U.K. su***de rates in the veterinary profession are 3 to 4 times higher than the general population. Our job can be so rewarding and has plenty of wonderful moments but sadly there is also a challenging side. Long working hours, the emotional toll of the job, and abuse from pet owners are some of the main contributors to these sad statistics. We are lucky to have lovely clients, however sadly even we have been on the receiving end of abusive language and behaviour. We understand that it can be an exceptionally stressful time when your pet is ill, but please be kind to the people that are trying to help ๐Ÿ’›

Fortunately there are some fantastic charities and organisations, such as Vet Life and RCVS Mind Matters, that are there to support veterinary staff when they are struggling.

We also want to acknowledge that pet owners may also find themselves struggling, particularly when their pet is ill or passes away. The Blue Cross has a support service for anyone struggling with the loss of their pet.

So whether you are a veterinary professional or a pet owner, there are people to help and support you through difficult times. Please reach out to someone if you are struggling ๐Ÿ’›

This Sunday is World Heart Day โ€“ and raising awareness about heart conditions matters just as much for pets.

๐ŸถIn dogs, the ones we see most often are Mitral Valve Disease and Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which affects the heart's ability to pump efficiently.

๐ŸˆIn cats, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the one to know โ€“ it can be sneaky, sometimes showing few signs.

๐Ÿฐ๐ŸนRabbits and guinea pigs get heart conditions too โ€“ usually cardiomyopathy, often linked to stress or underlying dental/respiratory issues. They're even better than cats and dogs at hiding it!

Common signs that may be associated with heart disease include: โ€ข Quieter than usual

โ€ข Tiring more easily
โ€ข Faster or more laboured breathing
โ€ข Coughing (particularly in dogs)
โ€ข Reduced appetite
โ€ข Less enthusiasm for exercise, play, or normal activities

๐ŸŒฐ Out on the Daventry footpaths this autumn? Keep half an eye out for conkers and acorns โ€“ both can be nasty if a dog eats them.

A blockage doesn't always show symptoms straight away, so it's worth mentioning to us even if your dog seems okay afterwards.

Any concerns, the team at Daventry Vets are here to help.

๐Ÿ“‹ It's National Pet Insurance Month โ€“ quick question: do you actually know what your pet's policy covers right now?

Cover can change at renewal, and older pets in particular can end up with more exclusions than owners realise.
