Why MRI Is Better Than CT for evaluation of the spine and brain
When investigating spinal conditions such as a disc extrusion (herniated disc) and a dilated central canal/syrinx, MRI is generally the imaging gold standard and offers several important advantages over CT scans:
✅ Superior soft tissue detail
MRI provides exceptional visualization of spinal discs, nerves, the spinal cord, and cerebrospinal fluid. This makes it much easier to identify the exact size, location, and impact of a disc extrusion.
✅ Better assessment of spinal cord abnormalities
A dilated central canal is a spinal cord finding. MRI can clearly show the spinal cord itself, helping specialists determine whether the dilation is significant and whether there are associated conditions such as syringomyelia.
✅ More accurate nerve compression evaluation
MRI can reveal whether a disc extrusion is compressing nerve roots or the spinal cord, information that is crucial when symptoms include pain, numbness, weakness, or changes in mobility.
✅ No radiation exposure
Unlike CT scans, MRI uses magnetic fields rather than ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for repeat imaging when ongoing monitoring is needed.
✅ Improved treatment planning
Because MRI provides a much more comprehensive picture of soft tissue structures, it helps neurologists, neurosurgeons, and spinal specialists make better-informed decisions regarding conservative management, injections, or surgical treatment.
CT scans still have an important role, particularly for evaluating bone structures, fractures, and spinal alignment. However, when the concern is a disc extrusion affecting nerves or a dilated central canal within the spinal cord, MRI usually provides the most clinically useful information.
