My #1 goal for Binx, my 4-month-old Working Cocker, takes precedence over absolutely everything...

A future of safe, reliable off-lead freedom so she can live her best, most fulfilled life with me.

Gundog breeds are hardwired to hunt and chase, and we live in Spaniel heaven surrounded by birds and bunnies!

If I took Binx on traditional “walks” right now, just covering lots of ground, she’d never lift her nose up. And as a super social butterfly, she’d leg it off to every human in a 50-metre radius!

I’d quickly become nothing more than her chauffeur, so expecting her to listen to me on walks would be completely unrealistic.

Her relationship would be with the environment and everything else in it. Not with me.

So, we aren’t doing "walks."

And if you have a young or distracted dog, I strongly recommend you switch up what you're doing too!

Instead, our outings focus on Exposure & Engagement:

1️⃣ We pick a small area and hang around until she acclimatises.

2️⃣ Once she settles, we play our familiar training games that we’ve been building in the garden. Fun and simple games that build the skills we need.

3️⃣ Every check-in and orientation towards me is rewarded heavily.

Yesterday we had a HUGE win…

We visited a spot rife with wildlife scent where she usually struggles to engage with me or even eat a treat. It was our fifth or sixth visit.

The second her paws hit the floor, she turned, looked at me, and was ready to have some fun with me!

When you build engagement as a habit first, outdoor training becomes so much easier, and off lead freedom becomes so much more achievable.

This is exactly what we prioritise in my Foundations for Life course.

Classes are held outdoors in a large field around other dogs and people, helping you build focus, engagement, breed fulfilment, and other practical skills for Gundog breeds living as pets.

This was a pretty emotional moment 🥹🖤🧡

I haven’t seen Lottie play with another dog since Dexter started going down hill this time last year and stopped playing with her.

Lottie is 9, a little bit sore sometimes, and is losing her eye sight, so I was worried that I’d missed the boat with her and she’d never enjoy having a youngster around.

Lottie has no experience with puppies and has never had to accept a new dog into her home before. I’ve taken it really slowly with them and made use of pens, gates and crates so she’s been able to take all the time she needed to feel comfortable.

Three weeks to the day that Binx came home and here we are 🖤🧡

Dexter and Lottie had such a gorgeous relationship and it has absolutely warmed my heart to see that she is going to be able to enjoy that once more.

My little family.

It will never be complete again without him, but seeing Lottie and Binx’s relationship developing is the next best thing.
