This autumn we have seen an increase in cases of Haemonchus (Barber's Pole Worm) 🐑🪱

Unlike other gut worms, Haemonchus casues internal blood loss rather than scouring.

Signs to watch for 🔎
Pale gums
Bottle jaw (Fluid swelling under the jaw)
Weight loss
Sudden deaths in severe cases

Our OvaCyte machine allows us to carry out worm egg counts and Haemonchus specification 🔬

If you're concerned about Haemonchus on your flock, speak to a member of the farm team.

🐄🌾 Proud to Support National Young Farmers' Week 2026! 🌾🐑

This week, we're celebrating the incredible young people who are the future of British farming. From caring for livestock to driving innovation in agriculture, Young Farmers play a vital role in supporting our rural communities.

As a veterinary practice, we're proud to support our local Young Farmers' Clubs.

To all Young Farmers across our community, keep doing what you love. We wish you a fantastic National Young Farmers' Week!

The certificates have arrived, and we’ve got some lovely feedback to share…

Our Dalston, Newbiggin and Tarn practices have received their accreditation certificates through the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Practice Standards Scheme 🙌

This means we’ve chosen to be independently assessed against RCVS standards and there’s a lot of work behind those certificates. Each practice underwent a thorough inspection lasting two to three days, checking everything from how we store and manage medicines and stock to our equipment, facilities and health and safety procedures.

And there were some lovely comments about the work happening across our practices:
💚 Dalston
Our welcoming waiting room, wellbeing garden and support for the team all received praise. The assessor also described the practice as “a leading light for the profession” for its sustainability work!
💚 Newbiggin
Our dedicated teams and wide range of services were recognised, with particular praise for the spotless, well-equipped equine facilities and the care taken to protect both patients and staff.
💚 Tarn
The assessor highlighted the great attention to detail in our farm health plans, our clean and tidy premises, and the specialist interest in goats that allows us to support clients from further afield too.

There’s so much work that goes on behind the scenes to care for your animals, so it’s brilliant to see our teams’ efforts recognised.

A big thank you to everyone across all three practices. There's so much to be proud of! 👏

We now have OvaCyte machines at both Dalston & Newbiggin

Using the right worming product at the right time is essential for effective parasite control, simply drop off faecal samples at the practice, and we can check the worm burden prior to worming 🪱

There is funding available through the Animal Health & Welfare Pathway, please speak to a member of the farm team for more information 📞

🐏 Buying new breeding stock? Don't overlook the disease risk

As tup sales have commenced, buying new breeding stock is a great opportunity to improve the genetics, performance and productivity of your flock.

But every animal brought onto the farm also has the potential to introduce disease, something that can have a long-term impact on flock health & profitability.

Read vet Jacob Whitaker's article on the three key areas to consider 👉🏻 https://www.paragonvet.com/news/2026/buying-in-breeding-stock-reducing-disease-risk
