Lovely Tilly was a very brave girl last week - she had to have a blood sample taken after eating grapes. Thankfully this lovely girl got the all clear with no signs of kidney damage - we all enjoyed the cuddles!

Educational Mondays: Polydactylism

Not something we see every day - lovely Star came in for a health check and we noticed he has extra toes! This condition, known as polydactylism, is rare but does not usually cause the patient any problems.

Sometimes the extra toes are more difficult to keep nails worn down, so they may required extra nail clips, but apart from this patients usually cope well.

Giant baby Bruce bit off more than he could chew last week - swallowing not one but two socks whole! Making him vomit failed to bring up the socks, so Sara and Holly retrieved them with our endoscope. Major surgery avoided for this boy…hopefully he’s learnt his lesson!

Well… the Scottish summer had other ideas for our staff ‘takeaway in the garden’ evening 😂 We still had a lovely time hiding from the rain (and completely forgot to take photos apart from this one of the dogs getting cuddles) - Penny needed a car nap to recover from all the socialising 💛💛💛 A well deserved treat for our fantastic team ###

Educational Mondays: GDV

We have done a few GDV posts, there's never a bad time to remind everyone of the signs of bloat and GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus)

This life threatening emergency is most common in deep chested dogs and signs include:
- restlessness
- drooling
- unproductive vommiting (retching but bringing nothing up)
- swollen abdomen
- becoming pale, collapsed, shallow breathing

These signs in dogs are an emergency! Always contact a vet if you are concerned your dog may be showing signs of bloat.

We have seen all ends of the spectrum at Heritage since we opened
- preventative gastropexies are performed using our keyhole equipment, allowing a minimally invasive way to prevent GDV in at risk breeds (such as Breagh and Bexley here)
- bloat without twist - poodle Dario presented with early signs, we passed a tube to relieve the pressure and performed a preventative keyhole gastropexy the following week when he was stable
- emergency GDV - Aine the greyhound presented early one morning with a swollen tummy and very restless, x-rays confirmed a twist in her stomach so she was rushed to theatre to untwist ger stomach and we performed a gastropexy at the same time to prevent future problems.
