What does “good” loose lead walking actually look like?
Because here’s the thing…
Different owners want different walks.
Some people are perfectly happy with their dog walking at the full length of the lead, as long as the lead is soft and nobody is being dragged into a hedge.
Some people love their dog trotting neatly beside them.
Some people want a bit of both.
And that is okay.
Loose lead walking does not have to mean your dog is glued to your left knee like a tiny furry soldier.
A good walk should work for both ends of the lead.
Your dog should be able to sniff.
Explore.
Notice the world.
Engage with the environment.
Have a lovely time being a dog.
But when you say, “Okay, let’s go,” they can move on with you.
When you need them closer, they can come closer.
When the lead reaches the end, they understand how to keep it soft.
When something exciting appears, they can stay in conversation with you.
That is the dream.
Not robotic obedience.
Not dragging.
Not nagging.
Not spending the whole walk saying, “heel… heel… HEEL… leave it… come on… stop pulling… no… THIS WAY.”
Just a dog and human moving together in a way that feels enjoyable, safe and connected.
Walks should be something you enjoy.
Not something you endure.
Not something you “get through.”
Not something that leaves your shoulder aching and your patience hanging by a thread.
That is what we work on in Lead Legends.
We help your dog learn how to walk with you, not against you, while still giving them space to sniff, explore and enjoy their walk.
Because loose lead walking is not about removing your dog’s joy.
It is about making walks better for both of you.
