Ares our Little Owl. A nightmare to film but always good fun! 😂

Did you know that the Little Owl is the UK’s smallest owl species? Little Owls measure in at a height of around 22cm and weighing around 180g. These tiny predators were introduced to the UK in the 19th century and were quickly naturalised due to the owls having a positive impact on our ecosystem.

The Saker Falcon is one of the fastest animals in the world when they stoop down onto their prey - reaching speeds of up to 190mph!

Photography Afternoon - Spaces available this Saturday!

Are you a photographer that’s looking for new inspiration or opportunities to capture birds of prey in flight?! Why not book in on our highly popular Photography events? Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, all levels of photography are welcome!

On this experience, our falconers will join you up in our woodland area for 2 and a half hours with some members of our bird team, where they will explore their environment in flight, or sit tight for some static shots, all allowing you to get some incredible shots.

Our next Photo PM is on the 12th of September, so don’t wait to book your spot! It’s £55 a head and booking is NECESSARY as we do have limited spaces.

Happy International Vulture Awareness Day! 🎉

Vultures are one of the most beautful yet misunderstood groups of birds, serving a vital purpose in our environment. Every time a carcass is left behind by a predator, these vultures are the clean-up crew, scavenging off this carcass and leaving it completely picked clean (with some species even eating the bones too). Vultures have an incredibly strong stomach acid that is capable of dissolving harmful diseases such as E.Coli, Foot and Mouth Disease, Anthrax and Botulism to name a few, so any disease left behind on a carcass is rid of in a few hours.

Despite their importance, their species are rapidly declining in the wild, facing issues such as poisonings, shootings and infrastructure collisions as examples. It’s days like IVAD that are important to raising awareness on and celebrating these wonderful birds.

We couldn’t fully celebrate IVAD this year due to attending an important wedding but we do intend to put on a very special carcass feed and celebrate these birds in full at the start of next year!

Guinness finishing up the last flight of the day!

Did you know that Corvids, including the African Pied Crow, have incredible memories and are actually known to cache food in certain spots to come back and collect later?

Corvids can hide their food using materials such as twigs, leaves, moss or bark for example, and visually memorise the area surrounding this spot! When they come back for the food later, they will track down the familiar surroundings to get to their cache!

Guinness always knows where his stash is … right in our glove! 🤷

The Bateleur Eagle is unique as it possesses a tail which is only a few cm long! This is unusual as tails are used to help steer and break when flying, so a short tail could be seen as a disadvantage. It is thought that Bateleur’s has evolved a short tail to aid them with low altitude soaring, over long distances. A short tail also has other benefits when on the ground. A short tail is kept out of the way when hunting on foot or scavenging off a carcass, resulting in the bird being more mobile. Additionally, the Bateleur does not have to raise its tail and lower its head to protect feathers ensuring that the head can stay upright allowing them a clear view of any potential threats.
