Western Counties Equine Hospital Western Counties Equine Hospital is a purpose built specialist facility in the south west.

Our purpose-built hospital, opened in November 2002, nestles on the edge of the Blackdown Hills in a peaceful, tranquil environment yet is easily accessible from the M5. It is a facility second to none in the Westcountry and since opening, we have invested in a continued program of development and improvements. This culminated in October 2009 with the award of RCVS Equine hospital status, the hig

hest level of accreditation available, reflecting the high level of veterinary expertise, nursing care and facilities available. We act as both a first opinion practice for the surrounding area and also a referral centre boosting full surgical facilities, accepting emergency and elective cases.

Homebred Posie, as she is known at home, won the Sport Horse 2yo class at Royal Cornwall Show. Posie was conceived by artificial insemination with the help from Western Counties team.

WHAT A WEEK AT BICTON INTERNATIONAL 💙

Our vet team have had a busy week as event vets at the Bicton International Horse Trials; Chris and the vets work very closely with Helen West, Andrew Fell and their amazing team to provide gold standard veterinary care for all horses who attend the event. Helen very kindly took time out of her busy schedule on the 21st May to give us and our referring vets a course walk, which was a real insight into what is involved in designing a technical but still rideable course.

Western Counties have been working with Helen and Bicton Arena since 2016 and are proud to be associated with such an iconic venue.

It was an especially busy week for Chris Johannson, who was veterinary services manager all week, with Hazel, Simon, Dave & Claire joining him at the weekend as FEI treating vets.

✨Veterinary Nursing Awareness month✨

May is the month for celebrating our nurses. We are super lucky to have a wonderful team of 6 qualified Veterinary Nurses and 2 student nurses here at Western Counties.

Unfortunately it is rather tricky to get all of them in a photo together at the same time, but here is one of 5/8s of the team holding the fort at the hospital.

Our nurses are involved within all areas of the practice and support our patients through every step of their journey through the hospital.

This may include:
🐴 Admitting and discharging patients from the hospital
🐴 Inpatient care (including clinical examinations, placing intravenous catheters, bandage changes and administration of medications and fluids, all alongside our two lovely veterinary interns!)
🐴 Assisting with various procedures
🐴 Being on call for any out of hours emergencies
🐴 Assisting with lameness investigations
🐴 Diagnostic imaging
🐴 Running of our in house laboratory
🐴 Obtaining images in our standing MRI unit
🐴 Theatre nursing
🐴 Assisting our vets out on the road with various cases
🐴 Providing support and coaching to our student nurses
🐴 & lots of cleaning!

David Seymour 👊🏼

A couple of weeks ago, David presented for the second year running at the European Veterinary Dental Forum, this year held in the beautiful city of Porto.

His case report on a minimally invasive surgical approach to the nasal cavity using computed tomography was awarded ‘The Paddy Dixon Award’, for best presentation by an equine resident. 🏆

David is nearing his fifth and final year as a resident of the European Veterinary Dental College, working towards sitting his European board exams and achieving the highest qualification in the field of equine dentistry.

🌟 MEET HANNAH 🌟

Hannah Martin BVM BVS MRCVS

Hannah graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2019 and started work as a large animal vet in Oxfordshire before moving down to Somerset in 2021.

She has spent the last 5 years working between Exmoor and Australia and has recently returned to the UK after spending 4 months travelling around New Zealand. 🇬🇧 🇦🇺 🇳🇿

Her main interests are racehorse/sports horse work, poor performance cases and gastroscopy. Outside of work, Hannah enjoys playing rugby, pub gardens and anything with an adrenaline rush!

MEET LILY,
She presented to us for a routine dental where as part of our exam we assessed her facial symmetry, at this point we could see that one of her third eyelids looked a little bit irregular.

Once sedated for her dental gentle pressure was applied to expose the third eyelid revealing it to be abnormal, a squamous cell carcinoma was suspected which can be quite aggressive.

As a result a plan was made to remove her third eyelid at home under local anaesthetic and standing sedation. Lily coped with her procedure very well and recovered quickly in the comfort of her yard.

Histology confirmed the suspected diagnosis of a squamous cell carcinoma, fortunately the mass was fully excised and Lily is doing very well.
