🐾 10 week breed series: Week 1 - Labradors 🐾

Labradors are one of the UKs best-loved breeds, and it is easy to see why.

They are friendly, loyal, eager to please, and usually very happy to be involved in whatever you are doing. Walk? Yes please. Snack? Absolutely. Sitting directly in the way while you try to make a cup of tea? Also yes. 🐶☕

But before you welcome a Labrador into your life, it helps to know what the breed can be prone to.

Common things to be aware of include:
🐾 Hip and elbow problems
🐾 Cruciate ligament disease
🐾 Arthritis
🐾 Weight gain
🐾 Skin problems
🐾 Ear infections

Labradors are famously fond of food, including things that are definitely not food, which means weight management and preventative care are especially important for keeping them comfortable and well.

If you are thinking about getting a Labrador, or already share your home with one, our latest guide explains what to expect, what health concerns to watch for, and what questions to ask before bringing one home.

🏆 The Bravery Awards 🏆

We are giving our next bravery award to Chico!

Chico came into us in December after not being himself, not eating and with a wound on his left hindlimb and with some lameness on that leg too 😢 He had previously had surgery on both of his hindlimbs so he had already been through a lot! After a full clinical exam, it showed he had a temperature of 40C, so it was decided to run some bloods. This showed he had really high inflammatory markers!

Our first concern was to get his temperature down and get his pain under control 🤒 He stayed in with us for 2 days on fluids and strong pain relief. We managed to get his temperature down, which meant we were now able to deal with the cause of his problem. We knew his best chance for this was to be referred to a hospital for specialist care!

At the referral hospital, imaging was completed that showed he had oedema in his leg, which is swelling cause by excessive trapped fluid in the tissues 😧 He was started on double antibiotics and underwent daily sedation to bandage his wounds!

He later had a skin graft to help close the wound, and had the previous plate in his leg removed to allow for an external fixator to protect the skin graft. The plate and some tissues were sent to the lab and this revealed the start of his problems! He had a multi drug resistant bacteria growing on the plate, a rare but very serious problem!

Chico has now had the plates in both his legs removed and has healed incredibly well from his ordeal! 🤩 This was all due to the rapid care from ourselves, the referral hospital and the specialists there. As well as all the continued love and care he has from his owners

Well done Chico! ❤️

A little paws for thought...

On Wednesday 10th June, from 1pm to 4pm, the whole Village Vets Formby and Crosby team will be getting together at our Formby practice for a team meeting.

During this time, our usual services will be a little more limited than normal. We will still be available by phone for emergencies, so please do call us if your pet needs urgent help.

Why are we meeting? Because good care does not happen by accident.

We are taking time as a team to share ideas, learn from each other, and look at how we can make your experience with us even better. From clearer communication to smoother visits and plenty of tail-wagging kindness, we want to keep improving for you and your pets.

Thank you for bearing with us while we press pause on some of our usual services for a few hours. We know it may be a little inconvenient, and we really do appreciate your patience.

Your pets are always at the heart of what we do.

Today is National Hug Your Cat Day to celebrate here are some pictures of the Village Vets staff hugging their cats❤️

A little note is that not all cats like to be picked up and fussed! Always make sure it’s on their terms☺️

As the hay-fever 🌺 🤧season is upon us Teampawsome at Village Vets Formby and Crosby have produced a little article about allergies in Dogs 🐶

Tap on the link 🔗 in the article below 👇 to get all the info ℹ️

Is your dog itchy, scratchy, licky, or doing the famous bottom shuffle across the carpet? 🐶😬

It might look a bit funny, but it can be a sign that your dog is really uncomfortable.

Allergies in dogs often show up through the skin, and the signs are not always obvious at first.

Things to watch for:
🐾 Paw licking
👂 Head shaking
🛋️ Rubbing against furniture
🌀 Rolling or scooting along the floor
😣 Scratching their ears, belly, armpits, or bottom
🩹 Red, sore, greasy, flaky, or smelly skin
🔁 Repeated ear or skin infections

Dogs can be allergic to all sorts of things, from food to dust mites, pollens, grasses, plants, fleas, and more. Some dogs are itchy only at certain times of year, while others struggle all year round.

The reassuring news is that itchy skin can often be managed once the cause is understood. Your vet can help rule out parasites, infections, and other health issues, then guide you through the best next steps for your dog.

We have put together a simple guide to help you understand why dogs get itchy, what allergy signs can look like, and when to ask for veterinary advice.
