🌡️ HOT WEATHER WARNING 🌡️

With temperatures expected to reach 30°C this weekend and into next week, please take extra care with your pets 🐾

Dogs can very quickly suffer from heatstroke, which can become life-threatening. Avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day (typically 11am–4pm) and opt for early morning or late evening walks instead.

⚠️ Extra care is needed for:
• Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boxers, Shih Tzu, Chow chows
• Overweight dogs
• Elderly pets
• Puppies
• Dogs with heart or breathing problems
• Thick-coated breeds

Helpful hot weather tips:
💧 Always provide fresh water
🌳 Keep pets in shaded, cool areas
🚗 Never leave pets in a parked car — even for a few minutes
🔥 Check pavements with the back of your hand — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws
🧊 Use cooling mats, damp towels, frozen treats or paddling pools to help keep pets comfortable

Signs of heatstroke include:
❗ Excessive panting
❗ Drooling
❗ Lethargy or weakness
❗ Vomiting or collapse

If you’re concerned your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, contact us immediately.

Our star patient this week is the lovely Fatima ❤️

Fatima is a beautiful Bulldog who has been under the care of Eden Vets since July 2024. Like many Bulldogs, she has struggled with allergic skin disease, requiring ongoing management with medication, ear care, and regular treatment adjustments. Her owners have been incredibly dedicated throughout.

Earlier this year, Gemma Ford introduced a new ear treatment called Cortotic (a steroid only ear drop) alongside Fatima’s existing allergy management. The improvement has been amazing — her ears are now the best they have ever been, meaning fewer flare-ups, fewer vet visits, and a much happier dog.

During her consultation, Gemma also discussed Fatima’s weight and mobility. Bulldogs are very prone to early arthritis and chronic joint pain, which can often be difficult to spot as signs develop gradually. A pain trial using meloxicam was started to see if hidden discomfort was affecting her quality of life.

Just three months later, Fatima’s owners describe her as “a new dog.” She is walking further, playing more, and has regained some of her puppy-like behaviours. As her mobility improved, she also began naturally losing weight — fantastic for her overall health and comfort.

Stories like Fatima’s remind us how subtle chronic pain can be in pets. If you have concerns about your dog or cat’s mobility or comfort, please speak to us about whether a pain assessment could help.

A huge thank you to Fatima’s wonderful owners for their dedication and care 🐾

Our star patient this week is the lovely Poppy! 🐾💞

She is a typical young spaniel with bags of energy and joie de vivre!

Unfortunately, she has already had a few health issues and has been a challenge to prevent interference with any wounds so when the time came for her to be neutered the owners felt our new keyhole technique might be useful.

Neutering (spay for females) is a procedure we perform regularly but until the last few months we have only been offering the conventional surgical approach. This involves making a small incision into the abdomen to allow removal of the ovaries +/- uterus.

With this technique the patient needs to be carefully rested for 10-14 days followed by a gradual return to normal exercise over the subsequent few weeks.
The incision is usually approx. 5-7cms long and this needs to be protected from licking and interference until the skin has healed in 10-14 days.

Our new Laparoscopic equipment allows the procedure to be performed using a camera and instruments through 2-3 small incisions. There is less stretching/tissue handling involved so the technique is less painful, and the recovery time is half that of the conventional approach, with rest for a few days post op, short lead walks from day 3 and a safe return to exercise from day 5.

Poppy was a superstar patient, and we were so pleased to see her doing so well at her post op check. By day 5 we were happy for her to return to normal exercise, and the 2 wounds had healed well with no cause for concern.

Well done, Poppy!!! 🌟

Here’s cheeky little Milo, eyeing up what he shouldn’t have eaten! Swallowing this whole is quite an achievement for such a small dog 😂🐛

If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have, it’s always best to run it past one of our vets incase they need to be made to be sick. We now use a special eye drop, which makes dogs sick within 10 minutes. 🤮
