But aren't you just bribing your dog?
Now if I had a pound every time I heard that! It's a myth! It's just not true.
However, I understand why people think it.
If you see someone using treats, it can look like their dog is only doing something because food is involved.
But think about it from a human perspective.
We all repeat things that feel rewarding.
We go back to restaurants where we had great food and amazing service.
We continue hobbies that make us feel good.
We work harder when our efforts are recognised.
Dogs are no different.
When a behaviour gets rewarded, dogs are more likely to repeat it.
The reward doesn't always have to be food. It might be praise, a game, sniffing, freedom, or simply feeling successful. It's science.
Force-free training isn't about bribing your dog.
It's about showing them what we want, helping them understand, and making the right choices worthwhile.
Because the goal isn't a dog who behaves because they are worried about getting it wrong.
The goal is a dog who understands and wants to work with you and be around you. 🐾
