Fireworks season isn't far away.

If you have a new puppy who has never heard fireworks, or a dog who gets scared by them, now is the time to start thinking about it.

The best time to start helping your dog feel more confident about noise is before the bangs begin, not on the night itself.
Small, gentle steps now can make a big difference later.

This year, I have Toast who has got noise aversive as she's got older, I've got Winnie who dislikes the noise regardeless and I have a new puppy who encountered his 1st fireworks unexpectedly a few weeks ago and was worried by it. So I too will be working on it.

It isn't too late, and you don't have to do it alone.

Yes, they have also ignored me completely to stare at a leaf.

Training doesn't mean a perfect dog. It means a dog who gets it right most of the time, and a human who has learned to laugh about the rest!

The photo we got: two spaniels with 6ft between them in a school hall, looking like butter wouldn't melt!
Every attempt to get them closer ended in chaos. We took what we could get!

Slippers or shoes? Gone.
Remote control? Chewed.
Peace and quiet? What's that?
Collecting sticks on walks? Always.

But also, those little sleepy snores after a busy day. Worth every single moment!

Things my dog definitely understands:
The sound of a cheese packet from three rooms away.
The word "walkies" spelled out, backwards, in a whisper.
The exact moment I sit down with a hot cup of tea.

Things my dog suddenly can't understand:
"Sit."
"Come."
Any word at all when there's a squirrel involved.

Sound familiar?

Good news, it's not selective hearing. It just means we haven't made listening more rewarding than the squirrel yet. And that's completely fixable.

You've watched the videos. Read the books. Tried the treats, the harness, the advice from your neighbour and the well meaning lady up the park.
And you're still not sure what you're doing wrong.

You're probably doing a lot right. You just don't have someone looking at your dog, in your home, with your routine.

That's what a 1-2-1 session is for. A plan made for your dog, and someone in your corner while you put it into practice. Someone to guide you and be there to support you.
