Our top tips for young puppies or adolescent dogs when it comes to firework season! 🎇
For many young dogs this will be their first firework season they’ve experienced, often this can be the connotation which leads to issues as they get older. This won’t work for all puppies but these are our top tips:
🏡 Leave them at home! If you’re going to see a fireworks display, leave them at home. Don’t take them with you, this is where they are in a busy, overwhelming environment with loud noises which they can find scary, with nowhere safe to retreat
📺 Have a radio or TV on a little louder than normal, but otherwise keep everything in your house the same (yes, really! The same!)
🐶 Treat them like normal, when the first firework goes off, don’t react. It’s instinctual for us to look for our pets to make sure they’re okay, a young puppy is less likely to be afraid of something they’ve never encountered so continuing to drink your tea on the sofa, or do the washing up as if nothing has happened is best
🐾 If they start to become nervous, don’t make a big fuss, but pop them somewhere ‘safe’. For many young puppies this will be their crate, you can pop them inside their crates with something like a kong or chew to distract them & hopefully they will react ‘less’ to the noises
👀 If they’re inquisitive and want to look outside, let them! But let them look from a window, so they are secure inside & can retreat away if they’d like.
There’s no hard & fast ‘rules’ when it comes to puppies & fireworks, but generally the less fuss that is made about them, the better they will be! 🌟
