We have a New Receptionist!💜

Some of you may of already met our newest member of staff, Donna.

Donna has recently joined Brookmead and this is her first time working with animals.

Donna has ridden horses from a young age and grew up living at her parents small holding with 4 horses, 3 cats, 2 dogs and various chickens.

In her spare time she enjoys time with her horse, Inka, competing at local events and long walks with her family and golden retriever Teddie.

Why dental x rays can be important 🐾

Written by our vet Dr Tania de Lucia:

“This little dog was showing signs of oral pain so he came in for a general anaesthetic and dental xrays as the teeth visually looked quite clean but there was clearly discomfort.

X rays showed that he was suffering from severe periodontal disease where the tissues around the tooth had become infected with bacteria and had caused significant bone loss which is not only painful but can lead to heart and kidney disease aswell as sepsis.

This tooth needed extracting and we are pleased to report that he is feeling much happier post operatively.

This condition would have been missed without the dental x rays which is why we only advise any dental work be carried out by veterinary surgeons under an anaesthetic so that the teeth can be thoroughly examined, cleaned and x rays can be taken to look for underlying disease.

Nurse clinics are available to discuss dental health and ways in which to prevent periodontal disease- and with 80-90% of dogs over 3 years old suffering with this condition in some form it is important to get into good oral health habits from a puppy!

Cats also suffer from dental disease and the nurses are happy to see them and give advise on how to keep their teeth clean, healthy and pain free too”

Have a look at the affected tooth! The blue ring shows where the disease is hidden underneath the gums and surrounding the tooth.
