aviour problems manifest because of boredom or a lack of stimulation although many more serious behaviour problems are caused by fear, anxiety or frustration. Addressing emotionally charged dog behaviour problems normally requires specific behaviour modification, practical training and above all, time and effort, but it is a journey that is well worth taking. Together with professional support from our Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant (CDBC) Al Rankin BSc (Hons), even the most difficult behaviour problems can be improved or resolved. Al is certified with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants and an expert in addressing fears, anxieties and building confidence in dogs. He provides Dog & Puppy Training classes in Lisburn, Banbridge, Lurgan and Portadown, individual training within 30 minutes of Moira and Behaviour Modification Services throughout Northern Ireland.

Did you know your dog might actually hate head pats? 🐶

Many just tolerate it, but a hand coming out of nowhere right over their eyes can feel super threatening and invasive.

Here are the stress signs to watch for next time you reach for their head:

Duck and cover: They lower their head or pull away.

Whites of the eyes: You see the white parts (whale eye).

Lip licking: They lick their nose or lips nervously.

Yawning: Big yawns when they aren't even tired.

Pinned ears: Their ears go flat back against their head.

Aim for the chest, chin, or the sides of their neck. They will love you so much more for it!

🐶 What Are Reinforcers in Dog Training? 🧀

If you’ve ever wondered how dogs learn so quickly (or sometimes… not quite so quickly 😅), the answer often comes down to reinforcers.

👉 A reinforcer is anything that makes a behaviour more likely to happen again. In simple terms: if your dog does something and gets something they love, they’re likely to repeat it!

💡 Common examples of reinforcers:

🧀 Food treats – cheese is a favourite for many dogs because it’s tasty and high-value
🦴 Dog treats or kibble
🎾 Toys or a quick game of fetch
🐕 Praise and attention (“Good dog!” plus a fuss)
🚪 Access to something they want (like going outside)
👃 Sniffing

🐾 Example in action: Your dog sits → you give a small piece of cheese → your dog learns “Sitting gets me cheese!” → they’re more likely to sit again.

✨ Key tip: Not all reinforcers are equal! What works depends on your dog. Some will do anything for cheese, while others prefer a ball or a good belly rub.
