WHAT’S HIDING UNDER YOUR COB’S FEATHERS? 👀
Those gorgeous, thick feathers might look beautiful, but do you know what’s actually going on underneath them?
These photos show exactly why it’s so important to regularly check beneath all that hair!
🩺 CPL (Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema) – A progressive condition commonly seen in heavily feathered breeds, causing swelling, thickened skin, folds and, in more advanced cases, significant changes to the lower limbs.
🐴 Mallenders & Sallenders – Areas of thickened, scaly or crusty skin found behind the knees (mallenders) and in front of the hocks (sallenders). These can become uncomfortable, cracked and sore.
🦠 Mites & secondary infections – Dense feathering can make it difficult to spot irritation, scabs and skin problems until they’ve become more established.
✂️ WHY CLIP THE FEATHERS?
Removing heavy feathering allows you to:
✅ See what’s really happening beneath the hair
✅ Identify skin changes, scabs and irritation earlier
✅ Clean, dry and manage affected areas more effectively
✅ Monitor existing conditions and follow veterinary treatment plans
✅ Make ongoing leg care much easier!
Jack is one of my lovely regular clients, we clip him every 6–8 weeks to help manage his CPL.
Keeping his feathers clipped short means his mummy can easily monitor his skin, spot and treat any new sores early, keep his legs clean and dry, and reduce the moisture and irritation that can build up beneath thick feathering.
CPL is a lifelong, progressive condition, and whilst clipping won’t cure it, regular feather removal can make a huge difference to how easily the condition can be managed.
Jack is a perfect example of why regular maintenance is so important. It’s not just about how they look, it’s about their comfort and wellbeing! ❤️
Because sometimes, what’s underneath the feathers matters far more than what’s on top! 🐴
