I believe life nudges us towards change. Sometimes we miss or overlook the signs, until that nudge becomes a shove, forcing us to pause and rethink our direction.

For me, it was a breakdown, followed by two years of recovery. With a young child, postnatal depression and a failing relationship adding to an already difficult time, I knew I couldn’t return to the constant demands of corporate life.

Throughout that time, my dog Murphy was my rock. He got me out for walks and brought comfort through endless cuddles.

I couldn’t see it then, but that painful chapter would eventually lead me towards something better. What felt like the end of my working life became the beginning of a career I love.

Sometimes, our darkest chapters lead us to possibilities we might otherwise never have explored.

This beautiful dog has SLO (Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy), an uncommon condition many owners have never heard of. SLO is thought to be immune-mediated, meaning the immune system mistakenly targets the tissues responsible for healthy claw growth.

As the attached photos show, claws can split or fall off, and may grow back brittle or misshapen. The condition can be very painful and can present with persistent licking or chewing of the claws, limping, reluctance to walk and discomfort when paws are touched.

It may begin with one claw before progressing to others over the following weeks or months.

The exact cause remains unclear. Genetics appear to play a part, with certain breeds more susceptible, but there is no proven trigger that explains every case.

Treatment is tailored to each dog, and ongoing veterinary care is often needed, with many dogs achieving good long-term control with the right treatment.

Before Hounds ’n’ Harmony was born, there were twenty years of understanding people.

Although Austin and Myers sparked my interest in canine behaviour, my career took me into HR, where I graduate in HR & Business Management and spent the next twenty years working in the corporate world.

As anyone who has worked in HR knows, the role can take a real toll. Long hours, delivering difficult news and supporting people through redundancy carry a considerable emotional weight, especially when managers blame HR for unpopular decisions or shy away from managing their own teams.

However, those years gave me invaluable business experience and a deeper understanding of human behaviour: how people respond to pressure, navigate change and build trust.

That understanding is just as valuable in the work I do today. Helping a dog means supporting the person at the other end of the lead too. Just as in HR, lasting change depends on understanding people’s worries, frustrations and everyday challenges, then giving them the confidence and guidance to move forward.
