Hillside Veterinary Centre Caring for your pets for over 25 years We all have the same passion - an undeniable love of animals.

We are a small animal vets, located on the main road through Corfe Mullen, near Wimborne and Broadstone and within easy reach of Poole Harbour in Dorset - a beautiful part of the country. Having been established since 1997 as a one vet practice, we have grown into a dedicated and passionate team of four vets, four nurses, three receptionists and two support staff. We have pets of our own that are part of the family and we always strive to treat our patients as we would want our own pets treated - with love, care, understanding and a gentleness that is required when pets are feeling a little under the weather.

Talking of seniors, as dogs get older, subtle changes can be easy to miss, that’s why we take a closer look at their overall wellbeing, discussing everything from mobility and weight to eating, drinking and behavioural changes.

We can also help identify age-related conditions early, so your dog stays comfortable, active and enjoying life for as long as possible.

Signs such as slowing down on walks, struggling with stairs, sleeping more, or changes in sociability aren't always "just old age“, they could be worth a conversation with us. 💛

Throughout October & November we are offering a wellness check with our nurses for dogs over 7 years which includes a free urine check for all clients and free blood test to clients who are part of our Pet Health Plan (this will be a discounted blood test for non PHP clients).

Fireworks can be a source of fear and anxiety for our pets, and naturally we want to help them through this. With bonfire night approaching and new year's eve in a couple of months, it's important to take steps to desensitise your pets to these loud and startling sounds.

🎇 Start Early
- Begin desensitisation well in advance of firework events. It's a gradual process, so give yourself time.

🐶 For Dogs:

🎇 Create Positive Associations
- Play firework sounds at a low volume while providing treats, playtime, or affection to help your dog associate fireworks with positive experiences.
🎇 Increase Exposure Gradually
- Gradually increase the volume of the fireworks sounds over several sessions, making sure your dog remains calm and comfortable.

🐱🐶 For Cats & Dogs:

🎇 Safe Space
- Create a safe and cosy space where your pet can retreat during fireworks. Provide soft bedding and their favourite toys.
🎇 Calm Environment
- Play soothing music or use white noise machines to muffle the sound of fireworks and create a calm atmosphere for your pet.

🐾 During Fireworks:
- Keep your pets indoors and secure all doors and windows to prevent escape.
- Close curtains and blinds to reduce the visual stimulation from fireworks.
- Use pheromone diffusers or calming sprays to help ease anxiety.
- Stay calm and reassuring to provide comfort to your pets.

🎇 Consult your vet
If your pet's anxiety is severe, consult your vet for additional guidance and potential medications.

Poor Finley needed to be made sick recently after getting into something he shouldn't have! But it didn't phase him in the slightest and he was such a happy boy, still wagging his tail and giving kisses between being sick!

Did you know that our Registered Veterinary Nurses are qualified to undertake certain procedures under the schedule 3 exemption? One of those is a dental scale & polish.

Teddy didn't need any extractions so his pre-op and scale and polish were completed by RVNs Abbi and Charlotte, under Keith's supervision. ANA Tyler was also on hand providing that all important post-op support and cuddles (see the video in our story).

We're passionate about our Registered Veterinary Nurses reaching their full potential in their role and are very lucky to have six RVNs and an Animal Nursing Assistant who are all so dedicated to their work. 💚

Bonzo (known as Banjo to his owners) is a very special boy. He does important work as a guide dog and recently prevented an accident when a car failed to stop at a crossing!

He loved our toy box when he came for his appointment with Alexa and, as soon as his working harness was taken off, was such a playful boy! Isn't it amazing how guide dogs can switch in and out of 'work mode' 😍

✨ Introducing (or, re-introducing!) Rachel!✨

Rachel is no stranger to Hillside and some of you may remember her from when she was with us as a locum vet last year. Well, we're very pleased to say that Rachel has now joined us as a permanent team member!

We're so excited to have her with us, completing our vet team alongside Keith, Chris and Alexa. We're sure you'd like to give her a warm welcome 💚

Here's a little more about Rachel:

Born and raised locally in Poole, Rachel qualified from Bristol University in 2009 and has worked as a small animal vet ever since. She has also done TNVR charity work with cats in Indonesia and has a particular passion for feline medicine and surgery. Outside of work she likes to get outdoors with her husband by walking, cycling, kayaking and paddle boarding. When she’s not outdoors she enjoys baking, cross stitch and embroidery. She also likes to travel and visit new places when time allows.
