Bluetongue cases are rising 📈

Here are some of the signs to look out for ⬇️

🐄 Cattle
∆ Nasal discharge
∆ Redness of the mouth, eyes and nose
∆ Crusting and erosions around the nostrils and muzzle
∆ Reddening of the skin above the hoof and between the cleats

🐑 Sheep
∆ Ulcers or sores in the mouth and nose
∆ Discharge from the eyes or nose
∆ Drooling from the mouth
∆ Swelling of the lips, tongue, head, neck and the coronary band

🦙 Camelids
∆ Inappetence
∆ Facial swelling
∆ Lethargy
∆ Acute respiratory distress

If you suspect bluetongue in your herd/flock, contact a Parklands Vet or DAERA as soon as possible.

Protect your flock against EAE this tupping time

Here is your Enzootic Abortion in Ewes vaccination reminder

· Keep it cool – refrigerate the vaccine when not being used

· Time it right

o EWE LAMBS from 5 months of age

o SHEARLINGS (1 YR OLD +) & OLDER should be vaccinated during the 4 month period before tupping

o ALL EWES, NO LATER THAN 4 WEEKS before the rams go in

o DO NOT use in pregnant sheep

Protect your flock from enzootic abortion or prepare for future losses.

🐏 Ram Fertility Day 🐏

A very productive and successful Ram Fertility Day completed yesterday, with a great turnout and plenty of valuable information shared.

Ensuring rams are fit, healthy and ready for the breeding season is an essential part of preparation, and fertility testing provides valuable reassurance and helps identify any potential issues before tupping begins.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and to all involved in making the day such a success. We’re now looking forward to the breeding season ahead and wishing everyone the very best for a successful lambing season.

Would you be interested in becoming a herd that takes cattle from TB positive herds?

"DAERA announced in late July revised criteria for Alternative Control Herds (ACHs) to facilitate movement out of TB restricted herds. There are two types of ACH:

1) Controlled Finishing Units (CFUs) to provide a mechanism to rear and finish cattle from bTB restricted herds.

2) Calf Rearing Units (CRUs). CRUs provide an outlet for bTB restricted calves up to 60 days of age and under certain conditions they can be tested and regain OTF status to be traded back on the open market.

These two systems provide options to relieve some of the hardship and potential welfare issues arising in bTB restricted herds. AVSPNI has pressed for and supported ACHs and we ask that you remind your clients that these options are available. Guidance on unit requirements are available from DAERA:"

If you believe you will be able to meet the ACH Conditions of Operation please complete the ACH Application Form and send this to Veterinary Service at your local DAERA office.
