Diarrhoea isn't the only cause of dehydration in calves. In this warm weather calves will become dehydrated as temperatures surpass twenty degrees.

Dehydrated calves will lose thrive and cost you money. A simple and cheap solution is providing an electrolyte solution between milk feeding. Increasing thrive and weight gains.

Hydro-stim is a simple to use electrolyte solution now in stock. If you have calves still on the bucket, contact Parklands to discuss keeping them right as temperatures soar.

🌡️Heat Stress 🌡️

It's that time of year where we need to be aware of heat stress in our livestock. When temperatures hit 22°C livestock will start to exhibit signs of heat stress. However, this is based on 60% humidity which is the UK average. If we take into account different humidity levels plus many other factors such as bedding type, breed, system, wind speed etc. This temperature threshold for heat stress can reduce dramatically.
Keep an eye on your livestock and be prepared with cooling systems.
Heat stress can occur at grazing. Provision of shelter is advisable, with cows allowed easy access to water troughs that fill quickly, cows won't walk more than 250 metres to water.
For housed animals sprinklers and fans are effective at reducing heat stress, sprinklers without air movement are poor

🐕‍🦺 Keep your dogs on a Lead 🐕‍🦺

Even the friendliest family dog can cause stress to sheep simply by being loose around them.

Sadly, this can lead to injuries, lost lambs, or long-lasting health problems for the flock.

✅ Keep dogs on a lead anywhere near livestock
✅ Stick to marked footpaths
✅ Never let dogs run ahead where you can not see them
✅ If your dog has strong chase instincts, consider avoiding livestock areas together
✅ Report any livestock injuries or loose dogs to the landowner or local authorities

Our farmers work incredibly hard year-round to care for their animals; a little awareness goes a long way 💛
