What breed is that??!!
When we are out with big girl Hemmy , then that is the question we hear the most! I’ve got to be honest, when I first met Hemmy and her mum out on a walk last year, I asked the same question.
And I wasn’t sure when I joined her for a walk the first time, whether I should saddle her up and ride her, or lead her round a paddock!
Yes Hemmy is probably the BIGGEST doggie we have to stay at Auntie Moos … but is also one of the gentlest of girls too.
Her mum laughs as she’s convinced that Hemmy, having grown up along side a teacup sized Yorkie, thinks she is one and therefore is rather confused about her actual size! It’s cute to see her out on walks going flat on her tummy and trying to get down to the same height as some of the other doggies we meet. Bless her, she SOoo wants to play with everyone and is a bit confused if some doggies shy away from her.
So, to get back to answering that initial question .. to give Hemmy her formal name… she is a cao de Castro Laboreiro - which is advised as a Portuguese Cattle dog .. one of the oldest European breeds and quite rare and certainly pretty unusual to be seen outside Northern Portugal so we feel blessed to be able to get to know such a majestic lady.
Before she came for her trial overnight stay I did a bit of research about the breed and specifically their personality. I was slightly concerned when I read that they were independent and strong willed and were used to having to make their own decisions in their original job of protecting their herd from wolves . I wondered if it was going to be a bit of a struggle walking her and whether she would decide that we WERE going to do something else of her choosing instead!! . But no, she is super well behaved on her haltie.
The details also advised that the breed can be rather suspicious and takes time to trust. Which makes it hilarious fun trying to give a tablet, put her haltie on before a walk, or attempt to wipe the drool off her ‘chops ‘after she’s been drinking ! Indeed Hemmy thinks it’s a great game to dodge all attempts at such things!
Hemmy comes with a big nose, big feet, big food bowl , big personality and an absolutely enormous dog bed that takes up most of our kitchen!

Little Luna…
We’ve had fun and games recently as little Luna’s been in for her first little stay with us. What a smashing dog she’s going to become once over the puppy stage! 🤪
Considering Luna’s only 5 months old she’s been an extremely good girl, but needless to say she’s keep us on our toes and reminded us that EVERYTHING is interesting, and what an exciting and fun game can be had when you run off with the household roll! We’ve had to develop eyes in the back of our heads to keep up with her antics and who knew that she could jump so high to reach her treats!! It’s been puppy love for us and I hope that mum Kate will now feel more relaxed when the family go away for a week in summer knowing that we’ve ALL survived our initial sleep over!! 😉
I know that some licensed boarders choose not to accept dogs under 12 months old, probably because, let’s face it, a puppy can be a lot more work, but personally I think It’s a great opportunity for an early familiarisation so that a future stay at Auntie Moos is rather like sending the kids to granny for the weekend!

We’ve had lovely Ella and Juno back to stay.
They are actually from two different homes, but Juno got on so well with Ella Bella Biscuit when we matched her on a previous stay thatJunos owners asked us to let them know when Ella would be in again! So Juno came for a little holibobs in February to join in fun with Ella and to do some more hero worshiping following her around adoringly!

The golden oldies!
We were recently blessed with spending a week with a couple of OAPs ( short for ‘oh absolutely precious ‘) of the 4 legged variety in the form of Ellie and her slightly younger little brother Rocky ( or Rockstar as we christened him).
Rocky despite his petite size and age , ( he’s 11 but everyone we met thought he was a puppy due to his cute looks and very spritely manner ) could keep up with the best on our country walks . That was as long as he could find a comfy knee and a fluffy blanket for after! Rocky what a little cuddle monster you are!
And Ellie, well she may not have been up for an epic hike, but she certainly was very excited to get out for her afternoon adventures . That generally incorporated a 25 - 30 minute leg stretch which extended to 45 - 50 minutes once she’d caught up on ‘pee mail ‘ and said hello to various potential new 4 legged friends. Being super social she particularly loved a visit to the various dog friendly cafes around the area and would delight in introducing herself to EVERY table to be admired and have her ears tickled . Such is a dog’s life!!
Two gentler souls you’d be hard stretched to find and it was hard to hear from their mum that Ellie had been rescued from a kill shelter several years earlier.
Well Ellie and Rocky, you’ve certainly found a lovely mummy now and are enjoying the high life!
We are already planning for some more Ellie inspired afternoon outings in preparation for your next stay . See you two sweeties again very soon x

Leo - The Legend
OMG …. What a legend this chappie is!
When mum and dad enquired as to whether we could look after their boy Leo while they visited grandchildren in New Zealand, I had some initial reservations about a dog staying for such an extended period. However, after a very easy trial night all those concerns melted away and as Claire and Tony booked up his stay nine months in advance, it gave me lots of time to match other compatible guests during his holiday. Despite being advised he was of slightly nervous disposition he has been a real superstar during his stay and fitted in with the plan so easily . I do sometimes wonder what our doggie guests must think with the ‘changing of the guards’
One companion would leave, and then a few days later, Leo would be running around and sharing the sofa with another new member of his pack.
Going for a walk for Leo mainly meant the opportunity to chase a squirrel, or three. (Those in our garden have now breathed a sigh of relief on his departure!)
And coming in from an adventure meant the opportunity for two more of his favourite things .. a treat from the cupboard and settling down on the sofa with at least one admirer to be fully employed lavishing affection in the way of a full body massage or a tickle behind his ears. And while you are at it please put another log on the fire and , make it hot, hot, hot! Yes our Leo adores his comforts, a cushion for his head and his special blanket, lovingly knitted by his mum. “If you wrap me up in it I’ll show you my best E.T impersonation “
He’s seen others come and go in his seven weeks stay with us , and now that ‘E.T’ has gone home himself, he has definitely left a massive hole here at Ivy Cottage.
Thank you SO much Leo for the joy and laughter you’ve given us over the last month, Christmas just wouldn’t have been half as joyous without you. But we’ll see you again very soon to show mum and dad where some of these lovely walks are!

My goodness does he love his walks ..but, don’t make the mistake of heading towards his lead if you are not ready to go out at that precise moment! In fact , don’t even dare to walk passed his lead or mention a walk if it’s not going to be happening immediately as he’s not patient with dawdles and will shout out for you to hurry up and get a move on!
He bonded immediately with Leo, a fellow cockerpoo who Ozzy had met on his look see with us. It’s been lovely to see them trotting along ,shoulder to shoulder, in front of us on the walks. Like a pair of synchronised horses in training to draw a chariot . They’ve clearly enjoyed each others company, although I think Ozzy would have prefered it if Leo hadn’t been quite SO distracted by squirrel hunting when he wanted to play chase! Ozzy has loved the early morning frost and especially the snow in the last days and he’ll tell you there’s nothing more fun than rolling in the white stuff and getting snow flakes stuck on your nose! Ozzy we’ve loved all the cuddles and hope we can share those again at a future stay x

Little Lola the sock monster !
Aww , I can’t tell you how lovely Christmas has been being able to share our home with two gorgeous cockerpoos, little Lola being one of them. When Tracy contacted me about a stay over Christmas I’d already got the lovely Leo booked in and having had Leo overnight a couple of times, knew that he too could be a little nervous in certain situations. So when Lola came for her first visit with her mum we arranged to borrow Leo, and from the first meeting , you could tell that all would be fine and a good Christmas would be had by all!
The timid little Lola who arrived grew with confidence as each day passed and rather than skirting round Leo as she had done at the start , she began to sit with him on the sofa and chose to et in the back of the car with him as we headed out on our walks. In the last few days she has thought it was fun to run up behind him and bat his fluffy tail with her paw! Cheeky girl would certainly not have done that a week ago!
This little girl likes her comforts - cushions (or more particularly putting her head on a pillow), socks (i used to chase her round as she thought stealing mine was great fun) , her ball - which she could play with 24/7 , and , DEFINITELY turkey and gravy which she had from Christmas Eve through to 28 th December . So mum, if you find she’s turning her nose up tonight if it just biscuits , now you know why! Thank you Lola for all the laughs and cuddles that you’ve brought for Christmas .
