The misadventures of Mr. Fox…
Following an undisclosed event in a hedgerow on last nights walk, Quill, without any fuss or drama severely butchered one of his toenails - as was evident from his ‘mild limp’ on exiting said hedgerow 🫣
So here he is at his most peaceful - enjoying a chemically induced sleep while the team at Mochdre Vets check out and repair the damage. Note the muzzle, even while under sedative. Nail damage can be extraordinarily painful, he’ll also be waking up rather confused and safety of the vet team is a top priority - for a dog already intolerant of handling by strangers, it’s not unreasonable to anticipate he may have lashed out. Having ensured he views the muzzle as a positive object through training games, the muzzle won’t add to his anxiety in this situation.
Following a smooth recovery (and no lashing out) he’s back home sleeping it off on the sofa - he doesn’t look like he believes my story that no one touched him while he was asleep 😳
Thanks to the whole team at the vets, who always seem to go the extra mile to be accommodating, flexible and compassionate 🥰

Ever been told by someone you consider a canine professional that your dog’s untrainable? Were they referring to them as an individual or written them off based on their breed in general? One of my lovely adult class participants confessed today that I hadn’t been her first choice for puppy training (2 yrs ago), but that her first choice had stated that spaniels are, in fact, untrainable 🤯 Sure, some individual dogs are challenging to motivate, some breed traits can lead to motivational challenges - the human at the other end of the lead can be notoriously challenging to train on occasion 😉 but…. Spaniels as an entire group in general?! Crazy talk! Please do beware of trainers making such statements, they probably don’t deserve your or your dogs time. Picture of my ‘untrainable’ Mr. Fox - as I was advised by the class trainer when he was 14 weeks old. What I think she actually meant was that she didn’t understand or appreciate the breed and had no motivation for self-development 😏 Struggling with your dogs behaviour or motivation? Congratulations to this rabble, who graduated puppy class today 🤣🥰 Gutted to have somehow missed a picture of Gus the Gorgeous ridgeback, too - not sure how that picture fell out of the reel 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️. Busy little class, all dogs and their humans made excellent work of activities over the past 6 weeks - the next rabble begin next week 😁

Behaviour change is tough… on both ends of the lead 👀 Teddy joined us for what his humans considered to be the simple task of teaching loose lead walking. For Teddy, this was about more than basic training, because at 12 months old, Teddy has pulled on his lead every time it’s been attached - 100% of his life so far with his human. 75% of the time he’s been alive, Teddy has believed it’s ok to pull on his lead. That’s a hard habit to break, from his point of view… From our POV, it’s easy, but requires time, consistency and empathy. That can sometimes be frustrating for guardians to hear. Because we understand this frustration, we’re careful to coach the human end of the lead with empathy, ensuring the human feels supported while managing their expectations and growing their own new patterns of behaviour, to better support their dogs learning of the new ‘rules’. If you’re struggling with your dogs behaviour, why not get in touch?✌️

What’s more challenging than convincing at 16 month cocker spaniel to loose lead walk…? 🧐 Training a 16 month old cocker spaniel to loose lead walk who’s recently come to his new home and has no apparent training or skills relating to the required behaviour 😱🤦🏻‍♀️ Loose lead waking can be challenging enough for spaniels - throw in some adolescence and you’ve got a real live wire on your hands ⚡️ The good news is George is easily motivated and a quick learner. And he has some excellent new humans to help guide him 🥰
