Keeping my skills up to date 🐾🩹

I’m pleased to have renewed my Level 3 Pet First Aid certificate.

As a dog trainer, your dog’s safety is always a priority, and staying current with first-aid knowledge means I’m better prepared to respond should an emergency ever happen during training.

Hopefully I’ll never need to use it — but I’d rather be prepared. ❤️🐶

Zola showing off her loose lead walking skills achieved using positive, ethical methods! 💜

Loose lead walking isn’t about keeping your dog glued to your side- the goal is to make sure the lead has some slack and you aren’t being dragged down the street!

Here Zola walks calmly with a loose lead and when she gets too far ahead, she naturally pauses and adjusts her position and returns to a loose lead position.

This skill was crucial to making our walks more enjoyable.

Archer showing off his recall skills in an environment full of exciting smells! 🐾

Recall is one of the most important skills you can teach your dog. A reliable recall can help keep them safe by allowing you to call them away from hazards such as roads, vehicles, other dogs, cliffs and other distractions.

Although the foundations of recall are relatively easy to teach, building a reliable recall across different environments and distractions takes time, patience and consistency.

The most important part? Creating a dog who wants to come back to you because they find you rewarding and valuable — no pain, fear or discomfort necessary. ❤️

As an IAABC member, all of my training is based on positive, ethical and science-backed methods designed to help you and your dog succeed.

Let them sniff. 👃🐾

Sniffing is a natural behaviour and a great outlet for dogs. It gives them the opportunity to explore their environment, gather information and engage their brains.

Here, Archer is using his nose to find a toy hidden in the long grass. A simple game, but one that allows him to use natural skills in a fun and rewarding way.

We don’t always need to entertain our dogs with more activity — sometimes, giving them the freedom to sniff, explore and investigate is enrichment enough. 🌿
