Scentwork is UNDERRATED

We can get so caught up in finding activities that fix something about our dogs.

But sometimes, an activity doesn't need to solve a problem.

Sometimes your dog can just do something because they absolutely LOVE it.

Swipe through to hear it from real people and their dogs, share which one resonates with you most or drop a comment to let us know what you and your dog get out of scentwork.

Happy International Dog Day!

My two definitely have their own little personalities!

What’s something your dog does that sums them up perfectly? Tell me in the comments 👇

Your puppy doesn't need MORE exercise.

They need opportunities to use their nose.

If you've found yourself thinking…

“Why are they still wired after that walk?”
“Why do I have to keep doing more to tire them out?”
“Why won't they settle in the evening?”
“I'm exhausted.”

More physical exercise isn't always the answer.

Puppies also need opportunities to sniff, investigate, search and problem-solve. Then time to rest and process all these things (up to 18 hours a day of good quality rest).

Scentwork gives puppies a chance to use their nose and brain without simply adding another mile to their day.

You're not failing because your puppy doesn't settle after a massive walk. They're a puppy. Give them opportunities to use their brain, opportunities to sniff, and plenty of opportunities to rest.

We've all heard the saying that "a tired dog is a good dog". This is only part of the story.

Some people think that obedience training and exercise are the key to making a dog well-behaved. Practicing commands for an hour each night, and taking them on long walks is not the 'magic recipe' for a well-behaved dog. They are definitely ingredients, don't get me wrong, but they make up part of a much bigger list which a lot of dog owners aren't aware of.

You're definitely not alone in this journey, most of my teams I work with now were at this same point before they started. Some have found the recipe that works, others are tweaking their ingredients

I can help you expand that ingredients list so the recipe makes more sense and you can enjoy the process at the same time.

Personally I had to find the right ingredients when Munchie was younger, we started with the sport I was most passionate about at the time but the parts didn't quite mix well together. I listened to what she was telling me and switched some things around and now she is thriving and also pretty chill for a terrier.

If you feel like you've tried absolutely everything with your recipe, just reach out and let's see what other ideas I can help you with!

The 5th heat wave this summer is imminent for England and Wales (we are still getting mid to high twenties in NI so this post also applies anywhere with those temperatures).

With it being the most consistently hot summer in recent years, dog professionals are having to adapt rapidly and being self employed in a heat wave has been no joke.

But we still would rather have every dog and owner safely enjoying or waiting to enjoy their hobby or walks.

That's why my sessions aren't completely fixed regardless of the weather.

If it's hot, I may change the location & time, shorten trails, increase rest, alter the difficulty or even cancel/reschedule if I don't think conditions are appropriate.

Because a good session isn't one where we complete everything we planned.

It's one where your dog is safe, comfortable and able to learn.

Your dog's welfare will always come before the session plan.

What Do You Call It Episode 5 ... Were You Right?

Back to scent related behaviour for this one and we had Roger demonstrating.....

Proximity Behaviour.

This is a big clue that our trailing dogs are getting closer to a scent pool or odour source... It also doesn't have to be near to a trail layer 👍

Thanks to everyone who commented and well done to you all for getting it correct! Plus the extra gorgeous poodle comments 🐩

Let me know in the comments if your dog shows any proximity behaviours even in everyday life 👇
