Another couple of days of warmer weather are predicted at the start of next week so I've put some of my hot weather tips for trailing in one place.

Heat can impact your dog's stamina, motivation, recovery and overall performance on trails. With our brief spells of warm weather, dogs don't get long to adjust to the sudden change in temperatures & humidity. It can also effect them for a few days around the hotter days.

A few small adjustments can make a huge difference:

🌅 Train during cooler parts of the day, I love a sunrise session.
🌳 Seek out shaded locations, for parking as well as trailing.
🚗 Use silver sheets to reduce vehicle temperatures*
*Pro tip of you have air con, blast it on your journey to a session then cover the vehicle straight away with the silver and it'll stay cooler for much longer
💧 Have cooling equipment ready for recovery. You can get fold up paddling pools!
👣 Slow things down with more tracking focused exercises. Shorter but more technical in the shade works the brain more than blasting over long distances.

Remember, the goal isn't to push through the heat. It's to adapt the training so your dog can continue learning safely and successfully. Advocate for your own dog if no one else is.

I've worked with more breeds this month than any other, 61 to be exact!

That's a lot of different genetic traits to take into consideration when looking at how to get the most out of training for each individual dog whether it's for scentwork, trailing or behaviour modification. Then think about those dogs who have two or more different breeds in their mix 🤯

That's part of my job though figuring out the best way to motivate, tap into and make use of what each dog brings to the table. Then break it down so their owners understand how to provide a fulfilling life for their companions. Definitely not a one size fits all approach 😅

What breed (or mix of breeds) is your dog? Drop them in the comments 👇 Bonus points if you can include a personality trait that aligns with exactly what their breed was designed for!

If your dog is fast, frantic and always in a rush, the answer usually isn't more excitement.

Many handlers assume their dog needs more drive, more motivation or more & more difficult exercises.

Often they actually need the opposite.

When a dog is in the right emotional state, they're able to process information, make decisions and solve problems much more effectively. That's when you start seeing real progress in trailing and detection work.

Methodical can still look fast but if it's all speed and no method where are the skills being built?

Having a "tricky" dog can make training feel heavy and never ending. Especially on the "bad" days.

So much focus goes into managing the big behaviours, solving problems and trying to make progress that sometimes we forget training should feel fun too.

That’s why finding something both you and your dog enjoy matters so much. The times where you can stop overthinking, celebrate the small wins and just enjoy being together.

And having the right community around you... That changes everything.

What type of training do you and your dog love most? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

Most people looking for a “quick fix” for their dog won’t enjoy my foundation courses.

The teams who get the most out of foundations are usually the ones willing to slow down, learn alongside their dog and celebrate the small wins that eventually turn into massive progress.

So no… these courses won’t suit everyone.

But if you want to build confidence, connection and a new way to work with your dog, you’ll probably fit right in

Drop me a message with “FOUNDATIONS” if you want to find the right starting or progression point for your team.

This is for the owners with the dogs whose journey has been difficult 🫶🏻

There is something very special about watching a dog like Honey go from being so unsure to a happy, confident dog on the trail.

Honey's first trailing experiences were full of conflict - moving vehicles, the wind, dogs would all trigger her reactivity.

We changed up a lot of the ways we were working with her, trying different strategies to build her confidence. But there still seemed to be an obstacle hindering her progress. Any unexpected change along a trail would trigger a switch from focused to fearful.

We decided to give her a break from trailing.

There were a lot of ups and downs (including health investigations, pain management and diet changes), but Rosie was able to introduce Honey to tracking at home, whilst continuing to learn on group sessions with her other dog.

Their progress was unmatched, and Honey was able to focus a lot better in a familiar environment.

This week, after 2 years away from trailing with Honey, Rosie decided to take the leap.

The session was in a similar environment to the first clip and she absolutely smashed it 👏🏻

Honey stayed locked on track and was able to have minimal reactions to things which, in the past, would have set her off for the evening.

Proud is an understatement for how everyone felt watching her - especially Rosie, who has put in so much hard work at home to get her to this point.

There is still more to work on, but we now have a solid foundation to help team Honey progress. 🍯

If you read this and relate to the journey, come and join us to see how using your dog’s nose - with an individual approach - can make their world so much bigger
