Hedgehogs on banknotes is wonderful news, but they still need our help. 🦔
Hedgehogs are in decline across the UK, so let's use this moment to take simple steps for them in our gardens and neighbourhoods:
🕳️ Make 13cm x 13cm square gaps in fences & walls so they can roam
🌿 Leave wild corners to provide shelter & natural food
🚫 Check before you strim, mow or light a bonfire

Handsome Marley 1031g

Some of you may recall Marley who was rather unwell in my garden in May 2025 weighing 627g. He had quite bad ringworm and a whole host of other parasites. He reappeared in the garden sometime in August 2025 when I noticed that Garfield‘s outdoor house looked rather dishevelled inside! On inspection it appeared Marley had taken up residence! He was in good health and a very good size.

Anyhow earlier in September this year I spotted him trying to get back into Garfield’s outdoor house one morning and horrendous poo spotted around the path and in the house!

Fast forward he has been treated for lungworm, capillaria and Coccidia!

As you can see he’s looking rather handsome and is raring to go back out! Stay safe Marley and stay close, you know where your best off my boy! 🦔💙

BEFORE YOU CLEAR THE LEAVES, CHECK WHO’S HIDING 🦔

A pile of fallen leaves may look like one more autumn job. To a hedgehog, it can provide valuable shelter or nesting material.

Hedgehogs are still active during autumn, feeding and gathering dry leaves, grass and other vegetation for their nests.

Leaf piles, hedge bases, long grass, log stacks and compost heaps can all provide somewhere sheltered.

Before tidying:

🍂 Watch and listen before disturbing the area

🍂 Move leaves gradually, starting at the outside edge

🍂 Never drive a fork or spade into the middle of a pile

🍂 Check long grass carefully before mowing or strimming

🍂 Leave some dry leaves in a quiet, sheltered corner if you can

If you uncover a resting hedgehog, stop, gently replace the covering and leave the area undisturbed unless the animal is in immediate danger.
