New Admission this afternoon- Amelia 240g

Found in a plant pot filled with very very smelly water, absolutely covered in flystrike and tiny hatching maggots 🤮

After a nice warm medicated bath Amelia smelly better with fluids and relevant medication started.

Thankfully her finders acted quickly and got her to me asap.

Keep fighting Amelia 🦔❤️

Hi 👋🏻

So apologies for the lack of posts in recent weeks, we have been extremely busy here at the Rescue.

It has been an extremely stressful year at the Rescue with having the new Hospital built and several problems that we have encountered along way, but thankfully with the help of many people including my poor husband we are getting there! Opening day coming soon 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I have been able to get away for a bit of a break which was very much needed!! This would only be possible with huge thanks to Susie and a silent (😂😂 on hand expert if required) run the Rescue for me whilst I have been away. I can’t thank you enough!!!

Also a big thank you to Suffolk Friendly Wildlife Vets who have helped over the past year with fostering and to Dawn Miller 🦔🦔.

This year so far has been the busiest year we have had with lots of ups and downs with Hedgehogs, some very challenging Hedgehogs with various issues, some happy tears and also some sad tears and also sadly confirmed cases of a virus that has been detected but more on that soon.

We have however managed to release many Hedgehogs back into the Wild, which wouldn’t be possible without the help of the public and of course the Rescue.

Many Rescues up and down the country are struggling due to various situations, whether it be personal, financial difficulties, abuse and sadly the list goes on.

Please, please support your local Rescue wherever you are as we all need to still keep going to help our wonderful 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔

Thank you so much to everybody that supports us here at Brightlingsea Hedgehog Highways Rescue, your help and support is invaluable.

Homes required 🦔❤️💙

PLEASE READ IN FULL AND PM IF YOU ABLE TO HELP.

So finally we have a break in the weather and we are getting ready to release some of the hedgehogs who are ready to be released!

Are you willing to provide some free lodgings with all food bills included?

However, we do have a few requirements….

As you can appreciate each hedgehog that comes into the rescue requires a lot of looking after, specialised care, medication (which is very expensive!) & vet visits to name a few.

When it is time for their release we want to ensure they have the best chance of survival by providing a few requirements for them.

✅ you will need to have an empty hibernation house or 2 if a pair are released

✅ you are prepared to support feed 365 days a year (approved hedgehog food/kitten biscuits) and provide fresh shallow bowls of water around the garden

✅ you have a feeding station (can be made very easily)

✅ if you have a pond, this MUST have a slope or a suitable way for hedgehogs to climb out

✅ no pesticides used and definitely NO SLUG PELLETS

✅ care taken when undertaking gardening work and if possible a little wild area

✅ currently have visiting hedgehogs and can access your garden in and out

✅ away from busy main roads

✅ no badgers 🦡 nearby

I know this will sound a lot but it really isn’t. We have a fantastic hedgehog population in Brightlingsea and surrounding areas and we must work hard to keep it this way.

I’m sure you are all aware of the current sad situation of our hedgehogs 😓

Rural hedgehog populations in the UK are experiencing a severe and ongoing decline. Estimates show a drop of 30% to 75% in the countryside since 2000. This sharp reduction has led to hedgehogs being classified as Vulnerable to Extinction on the Red List for British Mammals.

We really must help and support our beautiful and much loved Hedgehogs before it’s too late 🦔🦔🦔

Hi everyone 👋🏻

First of all I would like to apologise for the lack of posts in recent weeks, you may have read that up and down the country all Hedgehog and Wildlife rescues are struggling beyond belief.

I know here we have never known a year like it and it is having a devastating effect on our poor Wildlife.

Even though we have a wonderful new Hogspital we are at full capacity 😪. Unfortunately, because of the extreme high temperatures we can’t release any Hedgehogs at the moment. I don’t think I have ever prayed for rain so much.

Please, please, please keep your water bowls filled up daily for Hedgehogs and other Wildlife that are severely struggling. Please also continue to support feed with kitten biscuits or approved Hedgehog food. If you are in any doubt, please message us directly.

We are also battling the sun in our new Hogspital until we have professional blinds installed along with fly screens. This means we are constantly having to put reflective covers up at the Windows to keep the Hogspital cool.

We are also waiting for a portable air conditioning unit to come back into stock which we very kindly have been donated funds for 🙏🏻.

We are currently very low on James Wellbeloved kitten biscuits and Iams Kitten biscuits, with many mouths to feed we are getting through biscuits very quickly.

If you would like to contribute to the rescue there are many ways…

📢 New study published 📢

Road traffic is having a devastating impact on Britain's hedgehog populations.

A new study, funded by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and People's Trust for Endangered Species, has found that road traffic kills 15–29% of hedgehogs in some local populations every year and is responsible for 38–41% of all recorded hedgehog deaths.

The research, led by conservation scientists at Nottingham Trent University, indicates that this level of mortality could push smaller, already vulnerable populations towards collapse and local extinction.

Excellent work! Please remember Hedgehogs are wild animals and NOT pets!

Massive thank you to the police last night who seized PC Sonic from a person who wanted to keep him after us and hedgehugs care and release pontefract offered to take him but we both were met with abuse.

Hedgehogs are wild animals not pets.

You cannot keep them just because your child wants it.

It is an criminal offence to withhold medical treatment from wildlife in the UK under the wildlife act 2006.
