They served and protected us. Now it’s time to return the favour. 💙🐕 x

🚨 WE NEED HOMES — OUR RETIREMENT WAITING LIST IS GROWING 🐾

This month, we've successfully helped three incredible service dogs into their forever homes. ❤️

But right now, five more are still waiting.

We've carried out 12 home checks recently.
Seven unfortunately didn't meet the requirements for the dogs in our care. The remaining homes weren't "failed" — they simply weren't the right match for the particular dog.

And that distinction matters.

At Hero Paws, we do not mould a retired service dog to fit a family.

We find the family that fits the dog.

These dogs have spent their working lives serving. When they retire, they retire.

They are not being rehomed to become:
🐾 Yard dogs
🐾 Security dogs
🐾 Working dogs on smallholdings
🐾 Trial or competition dogs
🐾 Dogs that continue bite/protection training

Their rehoming contracts specifically prohibit continued bite training.

Imagine telling a police officer or member of the Armed Forces:

"Congratulations, you're retired. Now put your uniform back on and keep doing the job."

It doesn't make sense.

Retirement should mean taking the pressure off. Allowing them to decompress. Giving their bodies and minds the opportunity to adjust to life after service.

They've done their job. Now they deserve to simply be dogs.

And when we put criteria on a dog's profile, please believe us — there is a reason.

If we say no children, it may simply be because that dog has never lived with or been properly exposed to children. It doesn't automatically mean they're aggressive. It means we will not experiment with their welfare or your family's safety to see whether it works.

Please be completely honest on your application and during your pre-home-check interview.

Having another dog.
Having children.
Working long hours.
Wanting to continue working or training the dog.
Your fencing, environment or lifestyle.

None of those things automatically make someone a bad home.

They may simply mean you aren't the right home for that particular dog.

And that's okay.

We've met some genuinely lovely people through recent home checks who weren't suitable for the dog they originally applied for — but who could potentially offer an incredible retirement to another dog in the future.

We will keep looking for that match.

Unfortunately, we're now beginning to develop a backlog of service dogs waiting for suitable retirement homes.

So we're asking you to step forward.

If you've got the time, stability, patience and commitment to give one of these incredible dogs what they've earned…

A HOME. Not another job.

✨ Look who popped into Bark Avenue today… RIOT! 🐾💕

Remember this wee cutie from last year? Well, she’s all grown up now and came in to say hello! 🥹

Thankfully, this time she wasn’t shoplifting… 🤣🐶 Instead, she was thoroughly spoiled with plenty of treats, cuddles, and attention (as she should be!).

She is the absolute image of her mum Storm… and she’s definitely inherited the attitude too! 😅👑

Good luck, Brooke… you’re going to need it! 😂❤️
