Cockburn Vets has been caring for animals in Leicestershire since the 1930's. And, although we employ current best practice and our surgery is kitted out with the latest equipment, we still retain our traditional values. We care about animals, not sales of pet medicines, so you can trust us to offer ethical advice and never to recommend treatments or medication your pet doesn’t really need. Our team will always deal with emergencies that occur during our normal working hours as a priority. If you call our surgery outside of normal hours, you will be automatically transferred to our 24-hour emergency service provided by MiNightVet.

Have you heard of Alabama Rot?

Many owners assume the best way to avoid it is to stop walking their four-legged friend in muddy woodland.

But the reality is, most dogs who enjoy muddy walks will never develop Alabama Rot, and we don't know the exact cause of the disease. That means avoiding every puddle isn't a guarantee, and it shouldn't stop you and your dog from enjoying the outdoors.

Instead, focus on what you can do:
✅Check your dog's skin after walks, especially their legs, paws and tummy. Small sores, swelling or unexplained patches of redness are worth keeping an eye on.
✅Give muddy paws and legs a gentle rinse if your dog has been out in wet or muddy conditions. While this hasn't been proven to prevent ✅Alabama Rot, it's good general hygiene and gives you the chance to spot any changes early.
✅Most importantly, trust your instincts. If your dog develops skin sores that don't seem right, or they're unusually tired, off their food or vomiting, don't wait to "see how they are tomorrow". It is important to get them checked by our team.

Do you have a golden oldie at home? As we (sadly!) approach the colder, wetter part of the year, our senior pets may need a little more help to stay comfortable.

Here are a few things to think about as the colder months approach:

🏡 Keep them warm and comfortable
Make sure your pet has a warm, cosy bed away from draughts. Older pets may particularly appreciate a supportive, easy-to-access bed and somewhere warm to rest.

🐾 Think about mobility
Cold weather can make stiff joints more uncomfortable. Consider non-slip rugs or mats on slippery floors, ramps or steps where appropriate, and keep exercise gentle and consistent for mental wellbeing.

⚖️ Keep an eye on their weight
Reduced activity can mean your pet needs fewer calories, and maintaining a healthy weight is particularly important for older pets with joint problems.

🩺 Don’t assume changes are simply ‘old age’
Changes in mobility, behaviour, appetite, drinking, toileting or sleep can sometimes indicate an underlying health problem. Senior pets benefit from regular health checks to discuss any changes you’ve noticed.

💊 Ask us about pain and joint support
If your pet seems stiff, slower or uncomfortable, speak to our veterinary team. There are a range of ways we can support older pets, depending on their individual needs.

Did you know that those little treats we give our pets can add up to a surprising number of calories?

🐶For a medium-sized dog, just three small cubes of cheese can contain the equivalent number of calories as an entire bag of crisps for a person.

🐱And for our feline friends, the difference is even more striking! For a cat, three cubes of cheese can be roughly equivalent to a whole double cheeseburger for a human.

This doesn't mean your pet can never have a treat, but treats should generally make up no more than around 10% of a pet's daily calorie allowance, with their main diet adjusted accordingly.

Why does maintaining a healthy weight matter?

Being overweight can increase the risk of problems such as:
🐾 Joint and mobility issues
🩺 Diabetes
❤️ Cardiovascular problems
🫁 Breathing difficulties
💤 Reduced quality of life
⏳ And potentially a shorter lifespan
