Ouch – this must have been a sore one...

Rachel recently treated a horse who unfortunately had (somehow!) managed to sustain a cut to their nose that required veterinary attention and stitching.

After some pain relief and sedation, which allowed careful assessment of the wound, Rachel cleaned and prepared the area before suturing to encourage proper healing and minimise scarring. 🩺✨

Thankfully, the horse was a brilliant patient, and with appropriate aftercare and monitoring, we’re pleased with how the wound is progressing. 💙

ℹInjuries like this can look alarming, but prompt veterinary assessment and treatment ensure wounds are thoroughly examined and cleaned to ensure the best outcome.

💚 World Mental Health Day 💚
Today, we want to talk about something that matters just as much as the horses we care for - the people behind them.

We know that life isn’t always easy. Behind the photographs, the competitions, the yard days and the love we have for our horses, there can be worry, exhaustion, financial pressure, disappointment, grief and days when simply keeping going feels harder than usual.

And in veterinary life, we know that the same can be true. Caring deeply for our patients and their owners can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding. We often carry the difficult cases and heavy emotions home with us.

But none of us should feel that we have to struggle alone. 💚

If you’re finding things tough, Riders Minds is a brilliant platform that offers free confidential support and advice.

For our veterinary colleagues, we also want to highlight the support from our friends at Vetlife.

The truth is, we never really know what’s happening behind closed doors. We can’t see the battles someone may be quietly fighting. But if we don’t ask, and if we don’t listen, we’ll never have the chance to understand, and sometimes, simply knowing that someone cares can make all the difference.

💩 It’s time to collect poo…!

🪱Autumn is a great time to get your faecal worm egg count to us as part of your worming plan. It’s not the most glamorous job – but an important one.

💩 Don’t worry if you don’t have any collection pouches left; a freeze bag (or similar) will do the trick. We need a golf ball-sized sample taken from three to four different parts of the same fresh dropping. Once collected, squeeze the air out, securely seal it, and either drop it at the practice, or pop it in the post (well sealed!).

Remember to include your name, phone number, your horse’s name, age and worming history and we will get the results with tailored advice back to you asap.

ℹTop tip – it’s best to send your samples Monday-Wednesday to avoid them sitting in the post over the weekend, or drop them into the practice any time suring the week.

💡If you are a Healthy Horse Club member, then you have three worm egg counts and one reduction test included in your membership, plus one wormer or Equisal saliva test.

This service is open to everyone across the UK.
We provide faecal worm egg count packs for samples to be collected in, with individual worming advice tailored to your horse.

🦷 We recently saw a social media video of a dental being done without sedation, and if we are honest - the amount of unnecessary stress and terror it caused this little horse really upset our team.😢

💉So why do we sedate every horse for dental work?

It’s a question we’re asked quite often, and it’s a really good one.

The honest answer is: because we want to do the best job we can, safely and properly, giving the horse the best experience possible.

A horse’s mouth is a difficult place to examine. There are sharp teeth, sensitive tissues, a powerful jaw, motorised power tools that can cause damage and pain if not used correctly - or without the correct visibility, and a surprisingly small working space!

Sedation helps your horse relax, which means we can:

🐴 properly examine the whole mouth by touch, feel and assess with mirrors and picks
🦷 identify problems that might otherwise be missed
🔎 use a dental speculum safely and thoroughly
⚙️ carry out treatment accurately and comfortably
❤️ reduce stress and make the experience safer for both horse, owner and vet

And importantly, sedation isn't a punishment for being difficult.

We'd much rather have a relaxed horse, a safe working environment and the time to properly assess and treat their mouth than rush through a dental while they're uncomfortable or anxious.

Every horse is different, so we use an appropriate dose and monitor them throughout the procedure.

Our aim isn't simply to “rasp the teeth.”

It's to properly assess your horse's oral health, identify any problems and provide the treatment they need - safely and with as little stress as possible.

💙Because when it comes to dentistry, doing it properly matters for you and your horse. 🐴

We provide routine and advanced dentistry in Central Scotland.

🏇 Have you finished the season with a niggling feeling that something just isn’t quite right?

Maybe your horse is still doing the job, but they’re not quite moving, jumping, schooling or recovering like they used to.

Those small changes in performance can be easy to dismiss, but they can also be the first clue that something needs investigating.

This is where our team can help.

Our independent equine vet referral service prides itself on relationships built on trust.

Led by Hugh Somerville BVSc Cert AVP (ESO) (VDI) MRCVS – Advanced Practitioner in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics) & Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging is the only vet in the UK to hold both certificates, offering unique expertise in orthopaedics, imaging and surgical intervention in poor performance and lameness work ups.

Whether it’s a subtle change in way of going, a horse who isn’t quite performing at their best, or a problem that’s proving difficult to pinpoint, Hugh takes a thorough, performance-focused approach to getting to the bottom of it.

So, we can help you to find out what’s really going on.

🎉 A very proud moment for Loch Leven Equine Practice! 🎉

We’re delighted to share that Hugh Somerville has been elected to the BEVA - The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) Council — the governing body helping to shape the future of equine veterinary practice across the UK. 🐴

💡But what does that actually mean?
BEVA Council plays an important role in setting the direction of the association, championing the issues that matter to equine vets and helping to shape the future. Council members bring their own experiences from practice and work together to influence strategy, support colleagues and develop the profession.

For Hugh, this is a chance to bring almost 30 years of experience in equine practice, from working in both ambulatory and hospital settings to establishing and developing Loch Leven Equine Practice, to the table.

Hugh is particularly keen to champion mentorship and career development, helping ensure the next generation of equine vets has clear pathways to rewarding and sustainable careers.

💙 So what does this mean for Loch Leven Equine Practice?
Whilst nothing will change in terms of the day-to-day running of the practice, and Hugh's accessibility, it means we’ll have one of our own voices involved in conversations about the future of equine practice.

It means bringing the perspective of an independent Scottish equine practice to a national stage.

And, most importantly, it means Hugh will be able to contribute to work that supports the people who dedicate their careers to caring for horses.

We’re incredibly proud of Hugh on this wonderful achievement, and excited to see what the next three years bring!
