Another one! 🦦

Just a few days after Rudolf left us to start his journey to The Wild Otter Trust, we had another call from them asking if we could temporarily take in an otter that had been reported to them.

The care home looking after her had raised some concerns, as she seemed unusually subdued, so we arranged for one of our volunteers to go and collect her.

She’s since been checked over by our partners at East Lincs Emergency Vets and admitted into our care.

Unlike Rudolf, who left us last week, this little girl is still very much a cub and hasn’t been fully weaned from her mum yet.

For now, we’ll be concentrating on getting her stabilised and rehydrated before she has another assessment. Hopefully, once she’s well enough to travel, she’ll be given the green light to continue her journey to The Wild Otter Trust in Devon.

It’s certainly not what we expected just days after saying goodbye to Rudolf, but we’re glad we can help give this little girl the best chance possible.

We’ll keep you updated on how she gets on.

We’re onto our final few Jurassic World patients!

We must admit, this year has been quite something, with more gull chicks admitted than in any previous year.

With many of these species classified as red or amber under the UK’s Birds of Conservation Concern, we’re incredibly proud to have played our part in helping them. But wow, it’s been hard work! And, perhaps a little selfishly, we’re very happy to see the end of gull chick season.

Our final few are getting close to being ready for release, and once they’re safely on their way, we’ll turn our attention to reviewing the season. What went well, what didn’t, and what we can do differently to improve things for next year.

Fortunately, we managed to catch this photo just in time, as one of our younger patients practised a few wing stretches!

Our next project is officially underway!

At the moment, we can only accommodate one fox or badger in our care at any one time. This is largely due to limited space in our hospital facilities, particularly providing suitable bays needed for patients requiring closer monitoring and intensive care.

So, we’re doing something about it. We’re creating a dedicated mini hospital ward specifically for these patients!

There’s still plenty of work to do, but we’re already making progress. The flooring is down, LG Joinery will be getting to work on the insulation and internal boarding, and Paul Myers Ltd is already making sure the exterior is suitably protected.

Next, EISS will be joining us to bring power across the site into the new ward, before Plaztek Enclosures arrives with 4 more bespoke hospital bays, specially designed to meet the needs of our patients.

We’re hoping to have the new ward ready by the end of this year or early 2027.

But this is about more than just another area for wildlife.

It’s about increasing our capacity, improving the facilities available to the animals who need us, and giving us more opportunities to provide the level of care they deserve.

If you’d like to help us bring this new ward to life, you can support the project here:

More oiled gulls continue to arrive week after week following repeated incidents at the same food production factory in Grimsby.

As a result, we’re now running low on the Fairy Liquid we use to clean these birds.

If you’re able to help, we’d be incredibly grateful if you could add a bottle of green Fairy Liquid to your weekly shop. We have a donation box outside Gate A on Welholme Road, Grimsby, where you can drop it off.

We’ve found that the green Fairy Liquid works best for removing this type of oil, helping us clean the birds as effectively as possible. The fewer washes they need, the less stress they have to endure during treatment.

Thank you, as always, for supporting our work and helping us care for these birds.

Look at those teeth!

Before heading to THE WILD OTTER TRUST, Rudolf underwent a full head-to-toe assessment under sedation, and with teeth like those, you can see why!

Sedation not only made the assessment safer for our team, but also helped minimise stress for Rudolf.

While he was sedated, we were able to get a much clearer look at the wounds he sustained in his accident, take X-rays and thoroughly assess his teeth.

We’re pleased to say that Rudolf has been given the all-clear to travel and has now begun his journey to Devon, where he’ll receive specialist, species-specific care.

Good luck, Rudolf!

An unexpected visitor to a residential garden in Grimsby!

This male pheasant is slightly underweight, and was in the finders garden for over 24 hours, but thankfully, he’s bright, active and alert, and enjoying the rescue buffet.

Christmas has come early, or at least Rudolf has!

This young otter was taken to James Street Veterinary Centre in Louth, reportedly following an accident involving a large pond filter.

As you can see, Rudolf sustained a rather painful-looking injury to the end of his nose. However, in true mustelid form, he remains incredibly active and is certainly not impressed with his admission into rescue!

Otters are a specialist species, often requiring long-term care in facilities equipped to meet their specific needs. While Rudolf is with us for his initial care, he will likely make the journey all the way to Devon to join the UK WILD OTTER TRUST, where he can receive the specialist care he needs.

For now, it’s fish on demand, careful monitoring and a few very dedicated volunteers preparing themselves for the inevitable mess Rudolf will leave behind!

Some days, we do wonder if they actually know where we’re based…

This waterlogged adult Herring Gull was spotted in the park, just outside our rescue, by passers-by this afternoon. They alerted us to the bird, and it wasn’t long before the gull quite literally walked straight up to our gates.

The gull is now safely in our care and spending some time drying out in one of our incubators, where we can keep a close eye on them while they recover.

A late evening admission of a Tawny Owl from our colleagues at East Lincs Emergency Vets after the owl was brought to their practice from a suspected vehicle collision.

Fortunately, initial assessment found no fractures but, nonetheless, the owl will undergo further assessment and close monitoring going forward.
