Sunny walks near lakes, ponds and rivers can be lovely, but please be aware of the risk of blue-green algae.
Despite the name, blue-green algae is actually a type of bacteria, and certain types can produce toxins that are dangerous to dogs. It is often found in still or slow-moving water, especially during warmer weather.
It may look like:
⚠️ Green, blue-green or brown scum on the water
⚠️ Paint-like streaks on the surface
⚠️ Clumps or foam around the edge of ponds, lakes or reservoirs
⚠️ Water that looks cloudy or has an unusual smell
If you see water that looks suspicious, please keep your dog away and do not let them drink from it or swim in it.
Blue-green algae can be very serious, so it’s always safest to avoid unknown water if you’re unsure.
