Saracen Horse Feeds RE-COVERY MASH is highly palatable, versatile and convenient to use in many different situations. It contains a blend of ’Super-Fibres’, known for their superior digestibility and provision of non-heating calories, helping to support optimal fibre intake.

A source of electrolytes is included to maintain optimum hydration and thirst response after exertion, training and travelling, as well as during the change of season when temperatures may affect the horse's water intake. High levels of vitamin E help to support immune and muscle function and the live yeast aids optimal hindgut health. RE-COVERY MASH can also be used during periods of convalescence to mask medication and to support wellbeing. RE-COVERY MASH is a tasty high-fibre feed which can be fed as and when needed.

With temperatures soaring across the UK this week, it's not just horses in work that need hydration support.

Many owners associate electrolyte supplementation with exercise and competition, but horses can lose significant amounts of fluid and electrolytes simply through sweating in hot weather, even when turned out at pasture.

As horses sweat to regulate their body temperature, they lose key minerals including sodium, chloride and potassium, which are essential for maintaining normal hydration and physiological function.

With the current heatwave, ensuring access to fresh water, shade and appropriate electrolyte support should be a consideration for every horse owner.

What are Electrolytes?

You've heard the word, but do you know what they actually do for your horse?

Electrolytes are essential macro-minerals that every cell in the body needs to function. They power muscle contractions, transmit nerve impulses, and keep your horse's fluid balance in check. The key ones — sodium, chloride, and potassium — are lost in the largest quantities through sweat, along with smaller amounts of calcium and magnesium.

⚠️ One thing many horse owners don't realise: if a dehydrated horse only drinks water without replacing electrolytes, the water is not retained and the body actually switches off the thirst mechanism. That means they'll stop wanting to drink — and stay dehydrated. Water alone isn't enough.

It is important to look after your pets during this hot weather.
There are many things you can do that cost very little or nothing at all.

🐾 Provide plenty of fresh water

* Keep water bowls topped up and in shaded areas.
* Add extra water stations around the home and garden.
* Drop a few ice cubes into bowls to keep water cooler.

🐾 Create cool resting areas

* Keep curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
* Open windows (securely) to improve airflow.
* Use cool kitchen or bathroom tiles as resting spots.
* Dampen a towel with cool water for pets to lie on.

🐾 Adjust exercise times

* Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening.
* Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest hours (typically 11am–4pm).
* Reduce the length and intensity of walks when temperatures are high.

🐾 Protect paws

* Test pavements with the back of your hand for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for paws.
* Walk on grass where possible.

🐾 Offer cooling treats

* Freeze pet-safe treats or food in ice cube trays.
* Freeze low-salt broth or wet food for a cooling snack.
* Stuff and freeze toys for longer-lasting enrichment.

🐾 Never leave pets in vehicles

* Even with windows open, temperatures inside a vehicle can become fatal within minutes.

🐾 Provide shade outdoors

* Use existing trees, hedges, parasols, or tarpaulins.
* Ensure outdoor pets always have somewhere shaded to retreat to.

🐾 Know the signs of heatstroke
Watch for:

* Excessive panting
* Drooling
* Lethargy
* Vomiting
* Staggering or collapse
