HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MY DOG GROOMED ?

Have you ever looked at your dog on Monday and thought, "The coat is still fine," only to discover by Friday that it has apparently developed its own weather system? Grooming schedules can feel surprisingly hard to predict.

There is no single interval that works for every dog. Coat type, haircut length, shedding pattern, skin and health needs, lifestyle, grooming history, and the amount of comfortable home care all affect the right rhythm. Curly or continuously growing coats often need appointments closer together when kept longer. Long, silky, or feathered coats may also need frequent maintenance. Smooth and double coats may go longer between full grooms, while nail care, bathing, and seasonal coat removal follow their own timing.

Your observations are the best guide between appointments. Notice where the comb begins to slow down, whether areas of friction under the collar or behind the ears tangle first, how quickly the coat collects dirt, and when the nails begin to touch the floor while your dog is standing. Those details help your groomer recommend a schedule based on your actual dog, not only the breed name.

If you notice pain, persistent irritation, swelling, a sudden change in coat, or a new behavior to touch, let your veterinarian know. A groomer can notice and document changes, but cannot diagnose them.

The goal is not a perfect calendar. It is a routine that keeps your dog comfortable and gives both you and your groomer useful information. What is usually the first sign that your dog is ready for an appointment?
