As the weather turns and we start preparing our horses for the colder months, it’s a good time to check when they last had a dental examination.

This can be particularly important for older horses, who may have reduced chewing efficiency, missing or worn teeth, or other age related dental changes that can make maintaining condition through winter more difficult.

Regular dental examinations can help identify problems early and ensure your horse is comfortable and able to chew as effectively as possible.

👻 🎃🎃October is here 🎃🎃👻

Autumn is a great time to book your horse or pony in for a dental.

Good dental health is vital for all equines and all should be seen by a qualified dental professional at least every 12 months.

Horses teeth continuously erupt throughout their life and due to the upper and lower jaw being different widths (Anisognathic) As a bare minimum they produce sharp enamel points routinely which can cause pain and soft tissue damage.
Not to mention the formation of overgrowths such as hooks, ramps, dominant teeth etc,and occurrence of other more severe dental pathology such as periodontal disease, fractured and diseased teeth….

All in all can get quite scary!! 👻👹
And remember they don’t always tell you there’s a problem…

But hopefully not with regular visits from your local BAEDT member 🙋‍♀️🐴❤️

Unfortunately a referral needed for Penny who has unfortunately fractured a molar.
She showed no signs therefore highlighting how important regular dental checks are. 🥰

This is me trying to take more photos for the socials 😂

There’s a lot going on in a young horse’s mouth.

Before the age of five, horses undergo significant dental changes as their deciduous (baby) teeth are shed and their permanent teeth erupt.

This period often coincides with introducing a bit and bridle and beginning ridden work, making regular dental examinations particularly important.

Some of the common dental findings we may see in young horses include:

🔹 Sharp enamel points: these can cause trauma to the cheeks and tongue and may become particularly relevant once a horse begins wearing a bridle and bit.

🔹 Wolf teeth: small vestigial teeth which usually erupt when horses are young. Their position and potential significance should be assessed individually, particularly before ridden work begins.

🔹 Retained deciduous teeth (caps): baby teeth that haven’t shed normally can contribute to food trapping, inflammation, displacement of the permanent teeth and periodontal problems. Careful assessment is important, as premature removal can also damage the developing permanent tooth.

Regular dental examinations throughout these rapidly changing years allow developing problems to be identified and appropriately managed early, helping to maintain a comfortable, healthy mouth as your young horse starts their career. 🐴🦷
