Today we met the utterly gorgeous George who in 23 years of equine vetting has to be the smallest patient we have ever laid hands on. Look how teeny his head is compared to Anna's hands πŸ₯Ή

Excellent piece from Jo on trigger stacking in horses 🐎

Have you heard of trigger stacking in horses?

A horse might β€œsuddenly” spook, buck, bolt, or refuse to jump. Or they may be more reactive to a situation than is warranted.

Often, that final reaction isn’t about the last thing that happened at all. It’s the result of multiple stressors gradually building up β€” until the horse simply can’t cope anymore.

This is known as trigger stacking.

Triggers can include:
β€’ Pain or physical discomfort
β€’ Fatigue or soreness
β€’ Travel or competition stress
β€’ Changes in routine or environment
β€’ Training pressure or confusion
β€’ Lack of turnout or social stress
β€’ Anxiety or previous negative experiences

Each one adds a little more load to the nervous system. The horse may appear to cope perfectly well… until one small extra stressor tips them over threshold.

The important thing to remember is:
The final trigger is rarely the true problem.

A horse reacting explosively is often communicating that their system has already been overloaded for some time.

As physios, trainers, owners and riders, recognising the early signs of stress accumulation can help us support both performance and welfare far more effectively.

The weather is beautiful, but can be challenging for our equine companions. Heatstroke in horses is a serious condition where their body temperature rises dangerously high and can be life threatening if left untreated. Signs include:
-Rapid/shallow breathing
-Heavy sweating
-Increased body temperature
-Muscle weakness and tremors
-Lack of coordination
-Dehydration
-Restlessness or lethargy
-High heart rate
-Redness to the tongue
-Collapse
Keep your horses safe in the hot weather and seek veterinary advice if you are concerned.

There has been a recent increase in confirmed cases of flu across multiple counties, as shown in the map below.

Many cases are involving recently arrived horses, including imports from Europe, with new cases being confirmed daily.

With this in mind, it is worth checking your horses vaccination status to ensure adequate immunity. Whilst vaccinated horses can still be affected, the symptoms are much milder - meaning recovery is quicker, illness is less severe and crucially the ability for that individual to spread infection to others is also reduced.
