This handsome chap Cuthbert's horns are very elegant but were starting to press into the side of his face. Removing the horns would have been risky for him because of potentially leaving an opening into the sinuses, exposing him to infection (sinusitis), as well as losing a key feature of his looks as a Wiltshire Horn ram. So, instead, we trimmed off the problem sections using a dremel and wire under a light general anesthesia, with assistance from our vet student.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT BLUETONGUE THIS YEAR?
There are now 2, possibly 3, serotypes of Bluetongue circulating in England this season:
- BTV-3
- BTV-8
- BTV-12
Since July 2025, there have been 320 cases of Bluetongue in England - 308 cases of only BTV-3, 4 cases of BTV-8 and 7 cases with both BTV-3 and BTV-8. Currently, the virus, somehow, has avoided our patch of the country! (See map)
We have discussed the signs to watch for in previous posts; this post is about vaccination.
There are licenced vaccines available for BTV-3 and BTV-8 but they offer no cross protection, so to cover for both serotypes you would need to vaccinate with both.
We cannot predict how the virus will spread this season, and the impact it may have on your herd/flock - vaccination is a cost (in both time and money) that offers you peace of mind; everyone's situation and risk level will vary.
Therefore, we cannot offer a 'one size fits all' recommendation. We advise discussing your individual situation with one of our vets.

We love the variety that our job brings - we are medics, surgeons, obstetricians, consultants, podiatrists, and this week, dentists! This pygmy goat was getting food impacted in her cheeks - we anaesthesised her to get a good look at what was going on and found a wobbly molar tooth and sharp spikes on her cheek teeth, both of which we suspect would have been contributing to the issue. We are grateful to for lending us an electric tooth rasp to allow us to burr down the sharp ridges, and the wobbly tooth came out with some manual wiggling (technical term!)

WEEKEND WARNINGS!

With this sudden heatwave hitting, please beware of flystrike in sheep 🤢and heatstroke in cattle 🥵 over the next few days:

FLYSTRIKE - a lot of ewes have not yet been shorn yet, putting them at greater of flystrike because the warm damp fleece near the skin is attractive to flies. It may not be possible to see anything in the fleece with it being so thick, so watch out for any sheep that are separate from the group and/or flicking their tails.

HEATSTROKE - high producing cattle eg. dairy, are at greatest risk because their rumen is working so hard, producing lots of additional heat. Ensure your cattle have plenty of shade, and if possible, keep them in during the hottest part of the day.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. We should be aware of the mental health of ourselves and our friends, family and colleagues all year round but it is also good to take the opportunity to highlight the support available. Two farming specific charities, FCN and RABI have helped people that we know, and are just a phone call away; whether you are needing advice, financial support or just a listening ear, please make use of these charities that are there to help the farming community who are often under a lot of pressure for many reasons.
