The owner of Sussex county dog training is running a free Q&A session tonight at 7pm www.mydoghub.co.uk

A big well done to Mervyn, Kodi and Ralph who all did really well in their Gundog 121's this afternoon.

Their owners Jo and Alan work really hard with them and their goal is to have all three dogs working together at the same time in the field.

So far Ralph and Mervyn are working alongside together retrieving and hunting.
We are working individually with Kodi on his delivery of the retrieve and steadiness, but he's slowly progressing.

Great session guys!

Two essential skills every dog needs 🐾

Great recall and loose lead walking can make such a difference to everyday life with your dog — giving you more enjoyable walks, more freedom and more confidence when you’re out together.

We’ve got two training opportunities coming up this Thursday 15th October:

🟢 Loose Lead Walking Workshop – 6pm
If walks involve a little more pulling than you’d like, this one-off workshop will help you work towards calmer, more enjoyable walks together.

🟠 Recall – 3 Week Course – 7.15pm
Build a more reliable recall and give your dog more freedom, while giving you the confidence that they’ll come back when you need them to.

Both are practical, real-world training sessions designed to give you skills you can actually use on your everyday walks.

So I was scrolling this morning … as you do and I came across a question about buying a puppy. I wasn’t shocked by someone asking for advice on where to get one but I was shocked by the answers! No one was giving help on how to pick a puppy. No wonder people are ending up with dogs with behaviour issues and rescues are over flowing.

Here are my best tips because behaviour is linked to genetics and thus a puppy farmed shihtzu vs a well bred one will be so different.

1. Kennel club breeders do have certain rules and regulations but this doesn’t make all of them good breeders

2. The breeder should be happy to let you meet mum (by law she should be there) and she should be lovely and friendly and confident. The breeder should be able to give you the father’s details so you could go see him too or he should be there. Same applies.

3. The puppies should have been and still kept in the house. This means they will hopefully have been exposed to household noises, people, washing machines, other dogs etc.

4. If the breeder has followed any puppy development program such as Puppy Culture or Avidog? Even better, if not has the breeder made an effort to socialise the puppies?

5. Do you get a good vibe? Is the breeder quizzing you and making sure you are a right fit for their puppy? Is it clean? Are the dogs all happy and healthy?

Never buy a puppy to ‘SAVE’ it you are funding irresponsible and poor quality breeders. Never buy a puppy just because it is cheap … you will probably find out that you need to spend the difference on vet bills or behaviourists.

Lastly a good breeder will always want you to return their dog to them if you can no longer have it. Any age, any issue, no questions asked. Good breeders (and they can be rare) never make the rescue dog problem in the uk worse.
