🌾 Grass seeds – the tiny troublemakers of summer!

As the weather warms up, grass seeds become one of the biggest hidden risks for dogs on walks. They might look harmless, but they can easily burrow into paws, ears, eyes, and even noses 😬

Common signs to watch for:
🐾 Sudden limping or licking a paw
👂 Head shaking or ear irritation
👀 Squinting or watery eyes
🐶 Sneezing or pawing at the face

After every walk (especially through long grass or fields), take a quick moment to check:
✔ Between toes and pads
✔ Under armpits and legs
✔ Ears and coat (especially feathering)

Early removal is key — grass seeds can cause painful infections if left unnoticed.

If you’re unsure or can’t see anything but your dog is showing symptoms, it’s always best to get them checked by your vet.

Rachel and I joined Becky from OnlyPaws Hydro Fitness alongside the lovely staff at RSPCA Sussex West Branch CIO Mount Noddy Animal Centre to refresh and update our canine emergency first aid training.v

A big thank you as well to Ryan at Dog First Aid Sussex for such clear, practical, and hands-on guidance throughout the session — it really helped bring everything to life and build confidence in real-life scenarios.

It was such a valuable refresher and a great reminder of how important it is to keep these skills up to date so we can act quickly and confidently if a dog ever needs help. We would highly recommend this training to any of our clients, especially anyone who spends a lot of time with dogs or works with them professionally — it really does give you peace of mind knowing you’re prepared in an emergency.

🐾 Don’t Forget to Check Between Those Toes! 🐾

Mats and knots between the paw pads can become extremely uncomfortable and painful for dogs. Because the fur is packed into such a small area, tangles can pull tightly on the skin, trap dirt and moisture, and even affect the way your dog walks. Over time, this can lead to soreness, irritation, and sensitivity when standing or walking.

Signs to watch for:
• Excessive licking of the paws
• Slipping on floors
• Limping or sensitivity
• Dirt and debris trapped in the fur

Regular brushing, paw checks, and routine grooming can help keep paws clean, comfortable, and healthy. 🐶✨

If you notice matting between the pads, avoid cutting it yourself with scissors as the skin can be very delicate and easy to injure.

With temperatures staying exceptionally high over the next few days, we just wanted to reassure all of our clients that our salon is fully air conditioned and we always have fresh water bowls available to help keep dogs comfortable during their groom. ☀️🐾

That said, your dog’s welfare will always come first. If you have any concerns about bringing your dog in during the heat, we completely understand and are more than happy to rearrange appointments where needed.

Please also remember to take extra care during hot weather — avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day and always check pavements before heading out, as they can become dangerously hot for paws.
