๐พ Choosing the Right Training Approach for Your Dog
Choosing the right advice for your dog can feel like a bit of a minefield! There is so much information out there, so knowing what to look for can make a big difference. โค๏ธ๐ถ
Reward-based training is something that is strongly supported by modern veterinary science and major UK animal welfare organisations, including the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Battersea, as well as the British Veterinary Association.
But what does that actually look like?
โจ Teaching your dog what TO do: Rather than just telling our dogs what not to do, we can teach them what we would like them to do instead and reward those good choices. This helps them understand what we are asking and builds a really positive relationship.
โจ Understanding WHY: If your dog is barking, pulling or struggling in certain situations, itโs important to look at why they are doing it. Are they worried, frustrated, over-excited or simply struggling to cope? Once we understand the reason behind the behaviour, we can help them work through it.
โจ Building a partnership: Reward-based, force-free training allows our dogs to learn without fear and helps us build trust and confidence together. โค๏ธ
Our dogs give us their absolute trust every single day. They rely on us to guide them through the world, and I think they deserve to feel safe, understood and supported while they learn. ๐พ
