Recently, a study from Nottingham University asked if dogs can be Autistic or have other types of Neurodivergence, IF this is the case, there would need to be new education courses covering anyone offering help for ND dogs as there are for children with SENs.
I have thought about this for many years and often wondered if behaviour issues over the years in dogs are connected with the rapid change in how WE live, up until the late 1980โs, our homes didnโt have computers, tvโs with hundreds of channels that could stay on all night, childrenโs toys that screech, bang and shout, dogs used to go for a couple of good walks a day and then mooch around the house and garden and sleep up to 16yr hrs a day, over 40 years we have made their homes a large kennel of chaos and noise, with every family member having at least one screen in front of them, as well as tv screens almost filling a wall, even if not loud, our pets are trying to cope with this every day, in an effort to give our dogs some free time, they then go off to daycares for several hours or group walks with between 6-12 dogs they have no option but to put up with, they get taken into dog friendly cafes, pub and restaurants, which sounds lovely but the amount of stimulation they are getting is incredible, how many dogs do we actually see sleeping in these places? Are the dogs actually enjoying being there? Then the walk back through towns to get back home or to the car, with hundreds of people walking past them, the traffic, electric scooters whizzing past, then back home to more noise, I know people who take their dogs to activities everyday - ranging from various types of classes, daycare, group walls, activity weekends, their circadian rhythm is completely shot, if this is constant, who knows what it is doing to the dogs.
Are dogs ND or have we forgotten how to let dogs behave like dogs?
Just my thoughts ๐ญ
