Heading into the weekend. Equine owner checklist! 🐴
Before we shift to our weekend emergency calls we want to help you keep your horses safe and healthy.

Check off these three things today:

• 💊 Medications & Prescriptions: Check your supplement and medication buckets now. Do you have enough Prascend, Danilon/Bute, or other daily essentials to get you through until Monday?

Email [email protected] if you need an emergency refill and you can collect from us!

• 📦 First Aid & Storage: Ensure your yard's first aid kit is stocked with fresh vet wrap, cotton wool, and hibiscrub. Remember to store medications securely and away from fluctuating temperatures if the weather is turning.

• 🚨 Weekend Emergencies: If you face a colic, acute lameness, or a pasture injury over the weekend, Joe is always available. Please call 07401318455 EMERGENCY ONLY! [email protected] for any other enquiries.

It was a tense evening on Tuesday, but thanks to an incredible joint effort, we have a safe and happy ending to share.
Joe was called out to a challenging situation where a horse called Snowy had found themselves in a dangerous spot—stuck down a steep, hidden ditch behind the field boundary. In situations like this, every second counts, and the risks are incredibly high for both the animal and the handlers. The emergency services were contacted and a huge thank you goes out to Longton Community Fire Station for their rapid response, expertise, and specialized equipment. Working alongside them, Joe stayed by the horse's side, keeping them calm and secure throughout the extraction.
Thanks to the bravery of the rescue crew and the resilience of this beautiful horse, they were successfully brought back up to solid ground. They were then wrapped up warm in their rug to rest up, and were closely monitored. The hazardous area was securely fenced off to ensure the rest of the herd stays safe.
We are so grateful to everyone involved in this rescue. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.

Huge congratulations to Beth Wood and the fantastic Coolcom Bell for an incredible performance at the Succeed / Kelsall Hill Horse Trials! 🐎✨
After starting strong on a fantastic Dressage score of 32.0, the duo delivered an absolute masterclass across the jumping phases:
• 🟢 Show Jumping: A flawless, lightning-fast clear round!
• 🪵 Cross Country: Phenomenal riding to come home clear, picking up just 0.4 time penalties for finishing a mere 1 second over the optimum time.
Finishing on a brilliant total score of 32.4 to take 1st Place! 🥇 Overall winners!

Introducing our client Beth Wood.

Beth is an international eventing and advanced dressage rider who is competing at Kelsall on Sunday with her horse, Coolcom Bell.
Operating under her training and livery business, BW Equine based in Congleton, the combination has established an extensive competitive record across British Eventing and FEI-level disciplines.
Competitive Background
• Horse Details: Coolcom Bell now an established event horse with a record at Intermediate (BE) and numerous FEI results, Coolcom Bell was started under saddle and produced through the levels by Beth.
• Key Events: The pair has a documented history competing at major international horse trials, including appearances at venues like Aston le Walls horse trials, Warwick Hall, Cornbury House International, and Frenchfield across intermediate classes, BE100, and Open Novice classes.
• Qualifications: They have collectively achieved qualifications tracking up to international short and long formats, including CCI3* and CCI4* benchmarks.

Day in the life of an equine vet.

Morning: Mobile Diagnostics & Preventive Care
The day typically starts early with Joe packing his car, equipped with diagnostic technology. Because he functions as an independent ambulatory vet, his morning is filled with travelling between local yards for pre-booked appointments:
• Mobile Digital X-Rays & Lameness Exams: A frequent morning task includes loading up portable X-ray machines to assess horses showing signs of lameness or joint problems right in their own stables.
• Routine Health & Vaccinations: Joe administers standard health checks.
☀️ Afternoon: Specialized Clinics & Advanced Procedures
Afternoons often shift toward more intensive medical procedures, routine dental work, or specialized collaborative clinics:
• Gastric Scoping Clinics: Joe frequently coordinates specialized diagnostic days. This includes running Gastric Scoping Clinics (often partnered with local equestrian facilities) where he performs video gastroscopies to check horses for gastric ulcers.
• Management Advisories: Between procedures, Joe consults with owners on targeted worming protocols, weight management, and preventative advice for high-risk seasonal conditions like laminitis,, or winter impaction colic.
🌙 Night: 24/7 Emergency Response
An equine vet's day rarely ends when the sun goes down. Joe operates a dedicated emergency response line, meaning his nights are frequently interrupted to save lives:
• Colic Emergencies: Colic is a constant threat to horse health. Joe is frequently called out in the middle of the night to diagnose and stabilize critical colic cases.
• Emergency Rescues: Working with emergency services, Joe has been called out to complex scenes—such as collaborating with the Lymm and Powey Lane rescue services to safely extract horses that have fallen into waterlogged ditches or gotten trapped.
