🐾 The 3 Types of Exercise Your Dog Needs
Exercise isn’t just about making your dog tired.
Different types of activity challenge the body and brain in completely different ways — and a good routine includes a combination of all three. 💙
❤️ 1. CARDIOVASCULAR
Think walking, swimming and controlled aerobic exercise.
This helps build and maintain cardiovascular fitness and endurance, helping your dog stay active without becoming exhausted after a short period of exercise.
💪 2. STRENGTH
Strength work challenges the muscles, coordination and stability.
This could include controlled exercises such as sit-to-stands, stepping over poles, balance exercises or appropriately prescribed rehab exercises.
A stronger, more stable body can help your dog move more efficiently and cope with everyday activities.
🧠 3. BRAIN WORK
Not all exercise needs to leave your dog panting!
Sniffing, searching, problem-solving and enrichment provide valuable mental stimulation — and can be particularly useful for dogs who can't manage lots of physical exercise.
✨ SO WHY DO WE NEED ALL THREE?
Because the goal shouldn't always be:
“How can I tire my dog out?”
Instead, think:
“How can I support my dog's body AND brain?”
A 5-mile walk isn't automatically better than a shorter walk followed by some sniffing and a few appropriate strength exercises.
And the right balance will depend on your dog's age, breed, fitness, health and individual needs.
💦 And yes… hydrotherapy can play a role too! Controlled swimming and underwater treadmill work can provide cardiovascular exercise while the properties of water allow us to carefully adjust the level of challenge.
