PET TRAVEL TO THE EU – New Changes are effective from 22nd of April 2026
If you are planning to travel to the EU with your pet this year, there are some important rule changes you need to know about.
From 22 April, new EU rules have changed how GB residents travel with their pets. The good news is that holidays are still possible, but the process has changed.
Pet passports are now affected.
EU pet passports can only be issued and used by people whose main residence is within the EU. This means that pet passports held by GB residents are no longer valid for travel to the EU, even if they were issued before 22 April 2026.
EU pet passports should also not be used by people who only have a holiday home in the EU or visit seasonally.
So what does this mean?
If you are travelling from Great Britain to an EU country with your dog, cat or ferret, you will now need an Animal Health Certificate instead.
Please do not leave this until the last minute. An Animal Health Certificate needs to be arranged in advance, and leaving it too late could affect your travel plans.
