Happy National Wildlife Day! ๐ŸฆŠ๐Ÿฆ”๐Ÿฆ

While our daily focus is keeping your beloved pets happy and healthy, today we are celebrating the incredible wild neighbours we share our environment with here in Chelmsford. Wildlife plays a vital role in our local ecosystem, but urban living can sometimes be tough on them. Here are three simple ways you can help our local wild friends from your own back garden:

๐ŸŒณ Create wild spaces: Leave a small patch of your lawn unmown or build a log pile. This creates a perfect habitat for insects, which feed birds and hedgehogs.
๐Ÿ’ฆ Provide fresh water: Leave a shallow dish of fresh water out, especially during hot or freezing weather. Put a few pebbles inside so small animals and tired bees can climb out safely.
๐Ÿถ Check before you clear: Always check long grass, compost heaps, and bushes for hidden wildlife (like nesting birds or sleeping hedgehogs) before mowing or strimming.
โš ๏ธ What should you do if you find an injured wild animal? If you find a wild animal that appears hurt, sick, or orphaned, please contact a specialist rescue or wildlife charity immediately. They have the specialist facilities needed for rehabilitation.

If you need advice or are unsure who to call, give our team and we will point you in the right direction!

๐Ÿฑ Happy World Cat Day! ๐Ÿฑ

Today we celebrate the pets who:
๐Ÿ˜น Knock things off shelves just because.
๐Ÿ˜น Demand foodโ€ฆ despite a full bowl.
๐Ÿ˜น Pretend they've never met you after boarding.
๐Ÿ˜น Somehow shed enough fur to knit another cat.
๐Ÿ˜น Rule the household with a single look.

We wouldn't have them any other way. โค๏ธ

Drop a photo of your feline friend in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐ŸŒŸ Meet the Team โ€“ Welcome Molly! ๐Ÿพ

We're delighted to welcome Molly to the Elm Vets team as one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses! ๐Ÿ’™

Molly has a real passion for patient care and is dedicated to making every visit as stress-free and comfortable as possible for both our patients and their owners. Whether she's helping during procedures, monitoring anaesthetics, running nurse clinics, or giving plenty of cuddles and reassurance, she's always happy to lend a helping hand.

We're sure you'll soon get to know her friendly face around the practice!

It's officially Grass Seed Season... which means it's time for one of our (slightly bizarre!) annual competitions!

The challenge? Which vet can retrieve the most grass seeds this summer! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‚

Grass seeds may be tiny, but they can cause some big problems if they become lodged in ears, paws, noses, eyes or under the skin. If your pet has suddenly started shaking their head, licking a paw, sneezing repeatedly or seems uncomfortable after a walk through long grass, it's worth getting them checked sooner rather than later.

Who do you think will be crowned this year's Grass Seed Champion? ๐Ÿฅ‡๐ŸŒฑ

(Our patients are, of course, the real winnersโ€”we're just adding a little friendly competition to grass seed season! ๐Ÿ˜‰)

๐Ÿšจ Mischievous Miso ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’™

After vomiting some soft plastic at home, Miso came in to see us. X-rays revealed there was even more plastic still sitting in his stomach, so the safest option was to perform a gastrotomy to remove it.

Poor Miso had only been in just over a week ago for his castration... and it turns out the culprit was his inflatable buster collar, which he decided looked like a tasty snack! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿถ

Thankfully, the surgery went well and Miso is now on the road to recovery. Wishing this cheeky boy a speedy recoveryโ€”and hoping he sticks to dog food from now on! โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

โ˜€๏ธ Warm weather reminder! ๐Ÿพ

Help keep your pets safe in the heat by providing plenty of fresh water, avoiding walks during the hottest part of the day, checking pavements before heading out, and never leaving pets in a parked car.

If you're worried your pet may be suffering from the heat, contact your vet straight away.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Share our warm weather advice with all your dog owner friends to help keep all the pooches safe and cool during the heatwave ๐Ÿถโ˜€๏ธ

Itโ€™s Day 5 of Rabbit Awareness Week: Feeding Bunnies Better!๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฐ

A rabbit that stops eating is often a rabbit that needs urgent veterinary attention. Changes in appetite can be an early sign of dental problems, stress, illness or gut stasis โ€” which can quickly become serious.

Keep an eye on eating habits, droppings and behaviour, and always contact your vet if something feels wrong. Healthy rabbits start with prevention, proper nutrition and regular care.

Itโ€™s Day 4 of Rabbit Awareness Week: Feeding Bunnies Better! ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿฐ

Rabbits love to forage, dig, chew and explore, and food can be a great way to encourage these natural behaviours. Try scattering nuggets through hay, hiding treats in enrichment toys or offering safe forage to keep mealtimes fun and stimulating.

Feeding shouldnโ€™t just fill tummies, it should keep rabbits mentally and physically active too.

๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŒ Happy Cat World Domination Day! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฑ

Today, we acknowledge what cat owners have known all along... the takeover is already complete.

The evidence is undeniable:
โœ”๏ธ They demand meals on a strict schedule.
โœ”๏ธ They claim the warmest seat in the house.
โœ”๏ธ They supervise every Zoom call.
โœ”๏ธ They wake us at 4am because?!

And somehow, despite being ruled by tiny furry dictators, we wouldn't have it any other way. โค๏ธ

As veterinary professionals, we're privileged to serve these magnificent masterminds and their loyal human staff every day.

So, tell us...

๐Ÿพ What is the most demanding thing your cat insists upon?
๐Ÿพ What strange rule has your feline introduced in your household?
๐Ÿพ Or simply share a photo of your cat so we can admire the face behind the empire!

Let's celebrate our feline rulers by filling the comments with photos and stories of the cats who truly run the show. ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿฑ
