🍂 AUTUMN AWARENESS: SYCAMORE POISONING IN HORSES 🍂

We’ve seen quite a few cases of atypical myopathy recently, so we want to remind everyone to be vigilant this autumn! Sycamore seeds and seedlings can contain toxins that cause this serious and often fatal disease.

🐴 Spartacus is a 2-year-old pony who was seen by our vet Ingrid after his owners noticed he wasn’t quite himself — a reminder that even subtle changes can be important.

Spartacus was unusually quiet, carrying his head low, with some unsteadiness and muscle twitching. Although his vital signs were normal, blood tests and his owners’ knowledge of sycamore seedlings in his field helped us identify the problem quickly.

There is no specific antidote for atypical myopathy, but early recognition and prompt supportive treatment are crucial. Thankfully, we were able to start treatment straight away, and Spartacus made a full recovery! 💚

A huge well done to his owners for spotting that something wasn’t right, seeking advice and acting so quickly. 👏

🌿 Please check your grazing for sycamore seeds and seedlings. Signs to watch for include unusual quietness, weakness, unsteadiness, muscle twitching and orange or dark-coloured urine. If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately. Don’t wait for things to worsen.

We’re delighted to share that Spartacus has now headed home after his time with us at the clinic following sycamore poisoning.

After plenty of care, monitoring and treatment from our whole team, Spartacus is now back home where he belongs.

Cushing’s awareness campaign 🐴

This September and October, we’re supporting cushing’s awareness and helping horse owners recognise the signs of cushing’s disease in horses.

Cushing’s is a common condition in older horses and ponies, but the signs can sometimes be subtle and easily overlooked.

🔍 Spot it! ~ keep an eye out for changes such as:

- a long or curly coat that doesn’t shed normally
- Excessive sweating
- Increased drinking and urination
- Weight loss or changes in muscle condition
- Recurrent laminitis
- Lethargy or reduced performance

If you’ve noticed any changes in your horse, particularly if they are older, it’s worth having a conversation with our vets.

🩺 Early recognition, testing and appropriate management can make a real difference to horses living with Cushing’s disease.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more information about Spot it, Test it and Treat it, as well as details of the support available through Care for Cushing’s.

🗓️ We’re also supporting a free client webinar on Tuesday the 22nd of September at 7pm, covering Cushing’s in horses, including the signs to look out for, testing and treatment.
