Its done and just like that another hour of CPD completed and, I’ll be honest, this one was no fun whatsoever!.. took longer than that too, feel cheated 🤣

No waggy tails, clever enrichment ideas or fascinating dog behaviour. Just infection sources, infectious agents and how to stop the little horrors spreading. It was very much the boring side of running a dog daycare and home boarding business.

But the boring side matters.

When you care for different dogs from different homes, it isn’t enough to give everything a quick wipe and hope for the best. I need to understand how infections can enter the environment, how they spread and which cleaning and hygiene measures actually work.

So yes, cuddles, lovely walks and playtime are a big part of Golden Paws Essex. But behind the scenes, there is also an awful lot of cleaning, washing, disinfecting and learning about things I would frankly rather not imagine living on my surfaces!

Not the most exciting CPD hour I’ve ever completed, but definitely an important one.

Because the learning never stops and, apparently, neither does the washing!

A tunnel? A den? A giant treat-searching puzzle? A hide-and-seek station? Possibly a cardboard castle for one very important daycare dog?

We love boxes… so before it reaches the recycling bin. With the tape removed, a few carefully placed holes and plenty of supervision, this rather ordinary box is about to become this weeks enrichment masterpiece.

The dogs will probably turn it into confetti within minutes, but that’s all part of the creative process… and so much easier to get in the recycling bag 🤣

What do you think it should become?

If Friday had a face …
Meet Toby, who’s here for his very first stay with us.

This gorgeous old boy absolutely loves his cuddles and has already made some lovely new friends. He’s settled in beautifully and seems quite happy with the important Golden Paws arrangements: gentle introductions, plenty of rest and cuddles whenever required.

Everything at Toby’s pace …

🐾 PENNY’S GUIDE TO HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

Meet Penny our … Golden Paws cultural correspondent. 😂🏛️

So Heritage Open Days are back this September, and Penny and I have been doing a little digging of our own to find some of the places around Chelmsford and Essex where four-legged history lovers can come along too.

Lets be honest we don’t like leaving our firry friends out.

We’ve picked out a few dog-friendly options, with the useful bits included:
🐾 whether dogs are welcome
🦮 whether leads are required
🌳 where dogs can explore
🎟️ whether you need to book
💛 and, rather wonderfully, what’s FREE

Here are Penny’s personal picks 👉

And if you visit one, tag us! Penny would quite like to see whether anyone actually follows her travel advice. 😂🐾

Save this one for September and send it to the person who is always looking for somewhere new to explore with the dog.

History is always better with a dog beside you. ❤️ .. well everything is better with a dog beside you TBF 🥰

Back to school isn’t just for the children… 🎒🐾

September always feels like the start of a new term here too.

The wellies come back out. The DryRobe goes back in the car. The towel pile gets considerably bigger… and we’re starting to say goodbye to those summer days when sometimes the kindest decision was to skip the walk altogether.

Cooler weather means more opportunities to get back out exploring, but autumn brings its own things to think about too. Wetter ground, darker mornings, muddy paws and those lovely changeable British-weather days where you can leave in sunshine and come home looking as though you’ve crossed a swamp. 😂

So while everyone else is checking off school shoes, PE kits and pencil cases, this is our version.

Golden Paws is ready for autumn term. 🍂🐾

A little bit about me… and some of the people you don’t normally see on here. 🤍

If you’ve followed Golden Paws for a while, you’ll have seen an awful lot of dogs, quite a few cats, Frank, and probably various members of our household wandering through at some point.

But you don’t often get to see this beautiful lot.

Frank and I have a lovely blended family, and between us we have this ever-growing collection of children, partners and now grandchildren. Some are part of our everyday life at home, while others have grown up, flown the nest and built lives and families of their own.

And goodness, we are proud of them all

My girls were the ones who first made me Mum. And there’s something quite extraordinary about looking at those little girls you raised and suddenly realising you’re looking at grown women.

You spend years doing school runs, washing, worrying, organising, feeding everybody and wondering whether you’re getting any of it right.

Then somehow they’re grown.

And now there’s another generation coming through too….

One of the things I love most about our family is tradition. I’ve always loved creating those little things that become “what our family does”, and my girls have definitely inherited that from me.

Now we’re creating new traditions together, bringing old ones with us and making memories for the next generation.

Our family hasn’t got smaller as the children have grown up. It’s just grown in a different direction.

And perhaps you never really stop being Mum either. You still worry. You still want to feed everyone. You still check everyone is OK. And yes, you may occasionally ask a fully grown adult whether they’ve remembered a coat.

Surely that isn’t just me?

So, no doggy daycare chat today.

Just a very proud mum and Nana introducing you to a little more of the family behind Golden Paws.

And looking through these photographs thinking…

Bloody hell. We made all this. 🤍
