Every pet who walks through our doors is special to us, and we genuinely love seeing their gorgeous faces. We also love meeting the wonderful people who come along with them — because we know just how important these furry family members are. ❤️
If you’ve been following our Pets at the Vets posts since we started, you’ll know that it isn’t always possible for us to take a photo during every visit. Sometimes we’re simply too busy giving cuddles, providing care or helping your pet feel as comfortable as possible! 🥰

“He’s too old to have surgery, he won’t wake up from the anaesthetic!”

This is one of the most heartbreaking mistakes pet owners make, and it leaves so many animals suffering in silence. As a vet, I completely understand this fear.

But I need to share an incredibly important medical truth with you: age is not a disease, and it is not a reason to rule out anaesthesia!

In modern veterinary medicine, the risks for older pets are kept to an absolute minimum through strict safety protocols. We do full pre-op blood tests, we use advanced gas anaesthesia, and we monitor their vital signs every single second they are under.

Please don’t sentence your loyal friend to a senior life filled with chronic pain just because of a myth.

A fantastic quality of life at 14 or 16 years old is absolutely possible.

Let us run a full health check and see what their body actually says, rather than just looking at the date on their birth certificate!

There is nothing worse than turning around and catching your dog happily eating their own p**p.
As gross as it is, this behavior is actually incredibly common and has a medical name: coprophagia. But why on earth do they do it?

First, it could be a sign of a nutritional deficiency. If your dog isn’t properly absorbing nutrients from their food, or if they have an underlying condition like parasites, their body tells them to look for extra elements elsewhere, even in their own stool.

Second, it can be driven by anxiety. If a puppy was punished harshly for having accidents inside the house, they might start eating the evidence to avoid getting into trouble again.

And finally, sometimes it is just pure boredom or a habit they picked up from their mothers when they were tiny.

If your dog is doing this, please don’t just ignore it or shout at them. Step one is to bring them into the clinic so we can check for any underlying health issues or dietary gaps.

Have you ever given dog food to your cat, or cat food to your dog? Here is the hidden risk you are exposing them to.

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they strictly require a high amount of animal protein and essential nutrients like taurine.

Dog food simply does not meet these nutritional needs. Over time, feeding dog food to a cat can lead to serious health issues like pancreatitis, urinary stones, or severe gastrointestinal diseases.

Dogs, on the other hand, are omnivores.

They can tolerate a wider variety of ingredients, but cat food is far too fatty and highly concentrated for them. On a long-term basis, eating cat food can cause digestive issues, skin problems, or severe obesity for your dog.

A single bite by mistake won’t harm them, but always stick to the food made specifically for their species.

Have you seen this photo trending online and thought this tiny German Shepherd looked absolutely adorable? 🐾

While it may look like a miniature version of the breed, what you’re actually seeing is not a new designer breed or a “mini German Shepherd.”

This dog has pituitary dwarfism, a rare genetic and hormonal condition that affects normal growth and development.

Dogs with this condition can retain a very puppy-like appearance into adulthood, with shorter limbs and a body that is disproportionate to their size. While their appearance may seem cute, it’s important to remember that this condition can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing.

Sadly, affected dogs can experience hormonal imbalances, chronic skin and coat problems, dental abnormalities, joint and mobility issues and other ongoing health complications. Their overall quality of life and lifespan may also be affected.

❤️ Their appearance is not a novelty — it is the result of a serious medical condition.

Social media trends can sometimes make unusual physical characteristics look desirable, but responsible breeding should always prioritise health, welfare and genetic wellbeing over appearance.

If you’re considering getting a puppy, always choose a responsible breeder who prioritises the health of their dogs and carries out appropriate health screening.

🌒 The Solar Eclipse & Your Dog: What Might You Notice?

On Wednesday 12th August, the UK will experience a rare solar eclipse, with the partial eclipse visible between around 6pm and 8pm. 🌞🌑

While this is an exciting event for us, you may notice your dog behaving a little differently as the daylight suddenly starts to change.

Dogs are very observant and can be particularly sensitive to changes in their environment. As the light fades, some dogs may simply stop and look around, appearing puzzled as they try to work out why daytime suddenly feels a little different!

You might also notice some unusual behaviour, such as:

🐾 Extra sniffing and investigating – your dog may want to explore the garden or surroundings more than usual.

🐾 Pacing or increased alertness – changes in light and shadows can make some dogs pause and check what is happening.

🐾 Wanting extra reassurance – some dogs may become a little clingier, whine, stare at you or simply want to stay close to their favourite person.

🐾 A sudden burst of energy – the change in light may confuse their usual routine, and some dogs may decide it is suddenly time for a little evening zoomie! 😂

🐾 Chasing shadows – moving and changing shadows can be fascinating to dogs, and some may try to investigate or even catch them.

💚 Don’t worry if your dog seems a little quirky!

If your dog freezes, becomes extra curious, has a burst of zoomies or starts investigating the shadows, they’re simply responding to an unusual change in their environment.

The best thing you can do is stay calm, keep their routine as normal as possible and offer reassurance if they need it. A familiar voice, a cosy place to relax and their favourite human nearby can make all the difference.

And remember: never allow your dog to look directly at the sun — the same applies to us humans too! 👀🌞

The eclipse will pass, the daylight will return, and most dogs will soon be back to their usual happy selves. 🐾💚

🐶🌈 Did you know your dog can see colours… just not quite the same ones we can?

It’s a common myth that dogs see the world in black and white — but that’s not true! 👀

Both humans and dogs have special cells in their eyes called cones, which are responsible for detecting colour. Humans have three types of cones, allowing us to see a wide range of colours, including red, green and blue.

Dogs have just two types of cones, which means their colour vision is more limited. They see the world mainly in shades of blue and yellow. 💙💛

So, what would a rainbow look like through your dog’s eyes? 🌈🐾

🔴 Red, orange and green are likely to appear as shades of yellow, brown or grey.
🔵 Blue and violet are much easier for dogs to distinguish and appear as different shades of blue.
💛 Yellow is seen clearly as a bright, crisp yellow.

And here’s the funny part…

If you throw your dog a bright red ball across a green lawn, you might think you’ve picked something that really stands out.

To your dog, however, that red ball may look much more like a yellowish object against a yellowish-brown background! 😂🐶

So next time you’re choosing a toy, remember: blue and yellow are much easier for your dog to spot. 💙💛
